Why hasn't Kerry mentioned the Supreme Court?
He has such a good opportunity to nail Bush with this one. Bush will have up to four picks on the Supreme Court, and they are now only one vote away from overturning Roe v. Wade. The Kerry team say they want the 22 million single women who did not vote last year. Why is Bush being allowed to fly under the radar on this?

1. Because the vast majority of Americans are far too stupid
to understand how significant it is- and how it will impact not only their lives, but those of their children.

Unfortunately, it's not an issue that people know enough to care about- until something bad happens to them.

2. SCOTUS is SUPPOSED to be about the Constitution, not politics.
But we know that the reality is that the Constitution has become a hot button political issue.

Sad, sad, days...

4. Right On Cue
He discussed it, and very eloquently, today in New Orleans. Mentioned Scalia and Thomas by name.

5. He could shout about the Supremes, or anything else,
from the highest rooftop and we wouldn't hear about it. The mainstream media just don't report much of what he does or says.

6. Check Kerry's speech today:
In a speech that blended political rhetoric with Biblical references, the Democratic presidential candidate also branded Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia (news - web sites) and Clarence Thomas (news - web sites) as out of the mainstream and said Bush will appoint more like them if he wins re-election.

"We have fought too hard and come too far to let George W. Bush roll back generations of progress," Kerry said in remarks prepared for delivery to the National Baptist Convention, the country's largest predominantly black denomination. "John Edwards (news - web sites) and I know that the whole future of civil rights and affirmative action may hinge on a single Supreme Court vote."

7. Here Is Kerry Talking About Supreme Court Nominations Today
The Democratic presidential candidate also branded Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas as out of the mainstream and said Bush will appoint more like them if re-elected.

"My friends, we have fought too hard and we've come too far to let George W. Bush roll back generations of progress," Kerry said. "John Edwards and I know that the whole future of civil rights and affirmative action may hinge on a single Supreme Court vote."

10. Kerry needs to come out stronger with it...
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 07:44 PM by Andromeda
but to be fair Kerry has mentioned this a lot in his speeches. It just hasn't gotten the attention it should have. People are so involved with their own problems and their own immediate concerns that they can't envision how difficult their lives could be with a predominently neo-conservative Supreme Court.

Election 2002 should have been enough to scare them sh*tless but many people have a "let's move on - there's nothing to see here" attitude.

It just seems like more of a remote concern for most people, except for those who pay attention to the court appointments and how this can impact them.

11. To Try to Prevent the Xtian Churches from Mobilizing Against Him
With most of the Catholic hierarchy in the US already stumping for Boosh,
and ordering the churches under their control to do the same,
and with all the other conservative churches poised to join in if they haven't already,
it is likely that Kerry will continue to be very quiet about abortion.

Such churches are particularly powerful in many of the swing states,
many of which would ban abortion if they could.
