SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An early morning fire destroyed a church under construction in the Sixteen Acres section of Springfield.

Fire crews were first called around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday to the Macedonia Church of God in Christ at 215 Tinkham Road.

22news cameras captured the steeple crashing down as the fire continued to burn the church to the ground.

Springfield Fire Department Spokesman Dennis Leger said three firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze.

Bishop Bryant Robinson Jr. told 22News the church was one year into construction and was expected to open in the spring of 2009.

Leger estimated about $2.5 million in damage to the church. He said the Arson & Bomb Squad is investigating the cause of the fire.

Shades of the 1960's. What say you, Du-ers? Coincidence?

The FBI is on it.

1. All the FBI has to do is hang out in some of the local bars...
I'm sure someone somewhere is bragging.

2. Very heart-breaking. This is probably my greatest fear coming to fruition.
:( There are just some people who react in anger instead of trying to build bridges between the different communities of race. It is even more sad that the words of McCain and Palin kicked this violence off.

4. it would be wise to wait and see what the investigation says
This was a new building, not even open yet, just constructed.

It could have been any number of things that caused the fire.

5. IMO, this could be an insurance scam or a construction related problem. n/t

6. Maybe. But, if you had seen the minister talking about it this morning on TV (I did), I don't think
you would not say that. Do we even know that the church under construction was insured? And what is the point of building a church until it is almost ready to use, then burning it down for the insurance money? Something about that does not seem to make sense.

A construction related problem may be likelier, but the timing is what makes me ask if it is a coincidence or not. The church burning down a month or two ago would not have raised an eyebrow. This does. That does not mean there is a connection, but it does mean that the question arises.

9. The Reason that Clinton's FBI didn't find a conspiracy for the burning of churches in the 90's was..
...that so many ministers were burning their own churches.

I'm not saying that happened here but it has happened in the last 15 years. In fact back then it was an epidemic.

8. What the fuck is your goal here?

Trying to inflame people and cause more hostility before you have a SHRED of evidence? You are trying to get people to jump to conclusions and that is the LAST thing we need right now.

Wait for the evidence and STOP FANNING FLAMES.

12. Calm down - it's not just DUers who have suspicions
From the article:

Now state fire marshals, the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Bureau, and the FBI are investigating.
...
One parishioner told 22News that he considers the fire suspicious.

"We just had an African-American take the highest office and you know people fear change. Change is inevitable. I consider this to be a crime of hate," parishioner John Haygood said.

The timing is awfully suspicious and that makes it noteworthy. You could have easily just skipped on by this story or used that handy little ignore thread. No one is asking anyone to just jump to conclusions. The article states that the FBI is investigating. Your response is out of line.
