We need to have the Leviticus 20:10 referendum in 2010
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 05:01 PM by zulchzulu

Since the American Taliban want to play games with their hateful agenda by trying to deny the LGBT community the right of equality and privacy, let's throw them a bone and give them a taste of their own medicine. They usually refer to Leviticus 18:22 as a source to venom that a man may not lay with another man.

OK. Let's play. Since you can't just pick and choose your Bible and be a legitimate member of the American Taliban, let's go right to it, no pun intended.

Let's have all the states have a referendum that says that the Leviticus 20:10 statement should be implemented immediately. Here it is:

And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

-- Leviticus 20:10

So if you ever committed adultery or even remarried, you are stoned to death. Heck, it's in the Bible, so it must be followed, right?

Let's make this a national effort. Throw this crap right back into their hateful, spiteful, vengeful faces.

On edit:

To get to the "adultery part", there are a couple Biblical passages that would cover that:

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. (Mark 10:11-12)

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery. (Luke 16:18)

BTW, guess what group would be the most protected from this because they can't get married? That's right... the LGBT community!

4. Can you find one on divorce?
I think it might be more effective. Adultery often happens in secret. Divorce is in public, and more accepted.

5. well, if you want to go down that road, a man who touches a woman on her period
is supposed to be stoned to death.

9. Jesus said marriage/sex after divorce was the same as adultery.

"Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoso marries her which is put away doth commit adultery." - Matthew 19, 9

11. The subtext of the referendum would cover that...
Leviticus 20:10 would cover the stoning to death due to adultery. The adultery part would be made through a couple other Bible passages:

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. (Mark 10:11-12)

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery. (Luke 16:18)

13. The OT says kids who talk back to their parents are to be stoned to death.
But god is love, so he says it's OK to have your neighbor do the stoning.

I kid you not. That's what it says in the Bible!

6. Yea and don't you get put to death

Even if you have 'thought' about cheating on your wife?

The Bible 'says' thinking about adultry is one and the same, no?

and splitting hairs. Really an exercise in moral relativism at its finest. Either the good book is inerrant or not. Cover to cover.

Granted, the referendum would be stopped in court, but it sure would be fun doing grassroots work to get it passed!

21. Hmmm... introduce Sharia Law?
Yes I know it's Islam-centric but they have stoning to death for adultery too... provided there were 4 male eye-witnesses. For unmarried people committing adultery the penalty is 100 lashes.

27. if they really wanted to protect "The Sanctity of Marriage"
they might focus their energies more on an Amendment banning divorce! My boss was going off last week about Prop 8 and how gay marriage would demean the special bond that is marriage, and my co-worker goes "yeah but aren't you on like your 3rd wife?!? What the bond with the first 2 wasn't special enough?" to which he got all red in the face and just yelled "But that's different, and keep my personal life outta this!"

I don't know how we'll find enough non-adulterers in the state of Californication to get this on the ballot but it's a great idea anyway.

32. I'm going to look into it. Hopefully it can just be grassroots...
I'll figure out how much it costs to have a referendum set. Hopefully it would be all web-based (I can do the site...) and perhaps YouTube videos to build the message.

This needs to be political theater on a shoestring budget.

33. Um... Leviticus 25 Also Promoted Slavery
The Book of Leviticus prohibited the harsh ruling over other Israelites, but that slaves could be taken from the Gentiles.

Leviticus 25:44-46 "Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour."

Also, in Leviticus, a distinction is made between the hired servant and the slave.

Leviticus 25:48-53 "After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him: Either his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself. And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubilee: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him."
