Because I would think they should be able to. They should have military escorts and military pilots like the president does. You don't want a civilian pilot piloting the airplane the President Elect and Vice President Elect rides on.

1. Technically, it's only AF1 and AF2 when
the actual POTUS and VPOTUS are aboard, regardless of aircraft iinm.

So, no.

5. Any plane the President is on is Air Force One...
Even if he is on a Cessna that plane is called "Air Force One".

8. It started years ago when Ike was flying and there was an ATC incident...
...in which Ike's aircraft and a commercial aircraft with similar call signs almost collided. After that, any aircraft the President is on gets the ATC call sign "Air Force One."

10. close. Any Air Force aircraft the president is on gets the call sign
When he's on a marine helicopter, that aircraft gets Marine One. When Bushie did his little photo op in the Navy S-3, that flight was designated Navy One. The Army gets Army One. There has never been a Coast Guard One flight but the same would apply. And if the POTUS flies in a civilian aircraft, it is Executive One.

3. U.S. civilian pilots are among the best in the world.
Many of them used to be military pilots, and have thousands of hours of airline flying in addition to their military experience. A good civilian pilot is every bit as capable as a good military pilot. I wouldn't worry a bit about Obama and Biden not having access to government aircraft for now.

4. He will fly on nothing but Government planes, not sure about Air Force One-Two...
But maybe. Overall, his travel will be completely controlled by the Secret Service and the Air Force from now on.

7. He took the swat team with him to the gym.
They backed up the SUV to the front door. Secret Service protection has probably already quadrupled i'm sure.

9. There will never be a time in his life again where he won't be surrounded by at least 20 Secret S
And while he's President, he will always be followed by at least 100 people, on the ground, in the air, and in control rooms. I would guess far more than that.

* How long do former presidents receive Secret Service protection after they leave office?

In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection. In 1997, Congress enacted legislation (Public Law 103-329) that limits Secret Service protection for former presidents to 10 years after leaving office. Under this new law, individuals who are in office before January 1, 1997, will continue to receive Secret Service protection for their lifetime. Individuals elected to office after that time will receive protection for 10 years after leaving office. Therefore, President Clinton will be the last president to receive lifetime protection.

13. What problem do you have with airline transport pilots?
They have to have at LEAST 1500 hours just to earn the rating and most have much more.

Obama's campaign plane was flown by "civillian" pilots with ATP ratings and most likely operated under FAR part 121 standards.

The airline industry is the safest industry or travel mode in the world by far.

The military already has numerous aircraft for moving VIP's about as I mentioned elsewhere including a Gulfstream and two 757's. I'm sure he will travel on one of these.
