How my northern Dallas precinct became an island of blue in a sea of red
It's the darnedest thing, really. Despite heavy organization from the Texas House District 114 team for Barack Obama, when push came to shove, every precinct in the "rich" area of Dallas, from Forest Lane to the southern border of Highland Park, from US 75 all the way over to the billionaire's club on Strait Lane, voted for McCain instead of Obama.

That's right, folks. Every single precinct.

Except for mine.

Dallas County Precinct 1143 stands out like a sore thumb in the area that encompasses Preston Hollow, University Park, and Highland Park in that it is the only precinct in this area to vote blue this year instead of red.

I currently serve as both Democratic precinct chair and election judge for 1143. That means it's my responsibility to spread the word on our Democratic candidates, to walk the precinct and hand out campaign literature, to procure election clerks for our polling place, etc. And this I did.

But the real credit for making Precinct 1143 an island of blue in a sea of red belongs to the voters of Precinct 1143, who turned out in large numbers to show their support for Democratic candidates from the White House to the courthouse. I am humbled to be able to serve them.

Now to turn a few of our neighboring precincts blue in 2010...!!

2. I do not kid...
I saw the precinct map in the Thursday edition of The Dallas Morning News. We're just a little nubbin of blue sticking into a wide field of red. I thought for sure at least one of our neighboring precincts would turn blue as well, but there we are, standing alone.

So I pulled up the website for the Dallas County Elections Department and reviewed the results from precinct to precinct, and so far it looks like their numbers back it up. We are now Outpost 1143.

8. Highland Park is one of the wealthiest, and most Republican, areas of the country.
As is neighboring University Park, where sits SMU. Bush plans to move there after he moves his ass out of the White House, as do people like H. Ross Perot and his son. Actresses Angie Harmon and Stephanie March both are from there. It's a wealthy conservative hot-bed, and for ANY part of it to turn blue is quite a shock to me.

13. Are you referring to Snider Plaza?
As long as they don't get rid of Jack's Burger House.

14. I'm afraid so...
I think Jack's Burger House is safe (thank God), but some of the other shops may not be so lucky. The wrecking ball better not come anywhere near Kuby's, that's all I have to say.

There's also a neat little seafood restaurant where ginbarn once ran into Randy White. That was a good day.

15. My last memories of Snider Plaza were ME Moses and the various "cute" beading stores, etc.
where my chick friends and I used to hang out.

I'm glad to know that Jack's is safe, though. It shouldn't be a large library, anyway, as the only book they should put into it is this one:

11. Strait Lane is just west of Inwood Road
That's where Ross Perot's mansion is. You can also find a reproduction of the White House there, only done in pink hues.

The HD114 team had a meeting on Strait a few months ago. Very nice house, and a very gracious and accomodating host.
