There is nothing at all funny about this. Frankly it scares the hell out of me and it should you too.

1. Erm, isn't the anti christ supposed to be jewish or christian or some such?
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 05:02 AM by orestes
Besides, isn't King Juan Carlos I of Spain the Anti Christ? I swear, the Anti Christ keeps changing to whoever the religious nuts have a raging hate-on for at that moment in time, that it's hard to keep up.

Edit to add: Isn't the Anti Christ supposed to trick religious people like your Aunt into believing in him from the get go, anyway? If she thinks he is the Anti Christ, as opposed to fawning all over him, he's probably not the anti christ.

I *knew* it!!

Actually, I was convinced for years that it was Dumbya, but she's surpassed him in the downright evil stakes as far as I'm concerned.

6. Just point out to her that nothing in the bible mentions the Muslim faith at all...
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 05:06 AM by Curtland1015
...nor does it mention a man anything like Barack Obama anywhere in it. Nor is Obama Muslim in the first place. Not that it should matter if he were or not. Also, there are over a billion Muslims on the planet. It would be a shock to learn that each one of them were the anti-Christ because they are Muslim.

Barack is not the anti-christ or a messiah.

The choice of a President Obama may be a symbolic willful rejection of all forms of bigotry. He's presenting us with an opportunity to choose to make a resolution to be something better. To perhaps live up to values the United States has long espoused and seldom properly supported.

14. Biblically, the anti-Christ comes from Rome, which could mean the city or some part of the world
that was once part of the Roman Empire. Neither the U.S. nor Kenya (nor Indonesia) fits that description. Why do neo fundies take things literally only when it suits them? Tell her to get on her knees and repent of her dealing so loosely with the word of God--or doesn't she even know what it says? If the latter, then she must repent immediately of that.

Hey, I can throw guilt trips around with the best of them!

15. The Book of Revelations has
no validity for millions of American citizens. To others, misguided others, it is the central theme of the Bible. Besides, there was no Islam when the bible was written!

Ancient scripture should not guide a country's policy!

(In fact Obama's choice proves that he isn't anti-Israel or a secret communist/socialist/marxist/muslim etc).

Ask he doesn't she want to decide for herself rather than let some preacher/radio talk show host make her decisions for her.

I am convinced such people are only going on what they have heard and have never listened to Obama say a single word.

Says that Obama "scares the crap out of him" and that he won't "protect America", and that he's going to secretly unleash his religious fanatics once he's in office.

I have no words and just try to stay as far away from him as possible.

39. It's a very easy way
to put across right wing talking points. The other thing to look out for is that they don't ask or offer advice on how to combat these talking points.

I'm not saying that's necessarily the case with this particular OP but I have seen some that were vey obvious examples of this technique.

41. I have a whole bunch of relatives - repub, mostly baptist, with several
fundies - and we get stuff from sisters in law regularly. I have gotten a lot of good ideas for responses here on DU, both by asking as well as simply reading the posts. Part of my most recent "reply to all" response to one of them is

<snip>This by no means is a new phenomenon. “They” called President Eisenhower a Communist sympathizer who was selling the country out to the Soviet Union. President John Kennedy was an agent of the Pope trying to give control of the American nation to the Vatican. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was the Anti-Christ. I’ve read that “they” said the Pope is the Anti-Christ, and now some of perhaps the same “they” are saying it of Obama. Are we allowed more than one Anti-Christ, and if not, isn’t a random labeling as such similar to a Chicken Little ‘sky is falling’ warning?<snip>

After I found the fight the smears site during the election campaign, I used them more than DU, but DU has been most helpful to me.

I'm nearly as old as McCain, and recognize that I'm not as sharp as I used to be, so any help I get from any source I happily grab.

32. My father believes Obama is taking large donations from terror groups
and that he himself is a terrorist. And he was actively trying to convince everyone he knows of these "facts".

I figured out he was a racist at about age 15 when he didn't want me hanging around with a black friend of mine (for fear of all the black babies I would have as a teenager). I have never really forgiven him for that, nor for these statements over the course of this election, but you can't really change people that don't want to change. You just have to move on. He may be an idiot about a lot of things but he is still my father.

The run in gun purchases scares the living sh*t out of me. People "claim" that it's in preparation for an assault weapons ban... but there's a far more sinister alternative.

The combination of people buying guns and many Americans thinking that Obama is a Muslim terrorist spells motive & opportunity in my book.

I see another Brady... or George Wallace... or Jack Kennedy in our future, and I don't like it at all.

40. There is absolutely no reference to the AntiChrist as "Muslim" in the Bible.
It's not even possible, as the book of Revelation was written in approximately 90 AD and the Islamic faith did not exist until 600 AD. Granted, the angel showed John visions of a distant future, but they didn't stop along the way and visit religions that didn't exist yet.

I suppose if the Freeps really wanted to stretch things, they could point to references in Daniel 11 where there's a king who "rejects the god of his forefathers". And Obama's forefathers (On his dad's side of the family) were Muslim, although he never was himself.

Fundies believe this chapter also refers to the Antichrist, but that would also mean they would have to reject the idea of Obama being a Muslim.
