A vote too late for Obama
At the time, not voting felt right. Now it's time for regrets.
By Norah Vincent
November 11, 2008

I did not vote this year, and up until a few days ago, I felt good about that decision. But now I wonder if it wasn't a mistake. Or maybe not so much a mistake as something I will come to regret in time. As I've watched the wave of post-election elation rushing over so many people in recent days, and as I have been unexpectedly and powerfully moved myself, I've started to feel a little, I don't know, out of it. I decided not to vote for what I think are good reasons.

Though I am by no means as doctrinaire as I once was about political and social matters, I'm still a libertarian fiscal conservative. In the most concrete terms, this means I don't believe that penalizing people who make more than $250,000 a year is going to fix the economy.

In fact, I think it may worsen it. The argument goes deeper than that, of course, but no doubt you've heard it before, so I'm not going to bore you with it now. Let's just say that that's the short version of the reason why I didn't vote for Barack Obama.

There are two reasons why I didn't vote for John McCain. The first is that I think he is a man of brittle intellect and doctrinaire sensibility. These are potentially fatal flaws that he shares with the current president, flaws incidentally, that Obama does not share. In fact, Obama's intellectual curiosity and suppleness of mind is, in my view, one of his biggest selling points, whatever your political beliefs.

...much more...

20. a coworker could have written this
but her LIBERTARIAN FISCAL CONSERVATIVE ass actually voted McCain in spite of Palin. And unless they have some massive massive family wealth they're hiding there's no way in hell they're earning over $250K.

I don't get that at all. Someday she'll have to explain that choice to her new baby.

4. She could have shown a modicum of human decency and just lied and claim to have voted for Obama
rather than publish this insipid account of her half-assed regrets in the LAT.

I will never understand how any self-described libertarian wouldn't do everything in his or her power to keep authoritarian theocrats away from the WH. The limp "Palin was an unacceptable freak so I stayed home on election day" just doesn't cut it.

14. Haha
Yes, indeed.

I generally stop listening as soon as anyone describes themselves as a libertarian. Nothing they will say from that point on is going to be interesting.

12. This is the woman who posed as a man for a year
Then wrote a book about it. As a result of her experience, she became clinically depressed and voluntarily committed herself to a mental institution. Now, she's written a book about that. She's made big cash exploiting her lil' undercover adventures, assuming the lives and tragedy of others. No wonder she couldn't make up her mind.

... one the one hand:

a) she made the "false equivalency" argument... and then,

b) makes that case that the choices were actually not!

Sure, her anti-tax bias made it hard for her to vote for Obama, but she made an overwhelmingly stronger case against McCain and Palin.

do anything for her nation, not put her life on the line in Afghanistan, or somewhere else, she has no problems with the maimed and dying folks, she's all about not being "penalized".........what a wicked witch she is!

Why did the LA Times think this foolishness was worth publication? Why did they want to represent these miscreants, tax dodgers, and arrogant fools to prove that they are "open-minded". I am "open-minded" but I am not vacant like those fools.

23. Bandwagon.
This dimwit didn't feel a need to participate in the election, seeing insufficient difference, I suppose, between the two tickets. She's a fool, paid to form ill-considered opinions. Twenty months wasn't long enough to make a decision? And she's swayed by an acceptance speech? Fuck that.

"Libertarian fiscal conservative" is probably just code for "racist."
