Fewer whites vote for Obama in Alabama than anywhere else

Posted: November 12, 2008 6:07:52 AM

TUSCALOOSA | Don't tell Bill Maher, but the vote among the white electorate in Alabama for president elect Barack Obama was the lowest in the county at only 10 percent.

From an analysis by MSNBC:

"We took a look at Obama's performance with white voters in all 50 states. In 13 of them, Obama received less than 35% of the white vote. His three lowest performing states: Alabama (10%), Mississippi (11%), and Louisiana (14%). The other 10: GA (23%), SC (26%), TX (26%), OK (29%), AR (30%), UT (31%), AK (32%), WY (32%), ID (33%), and TN (34%). On the other hand, Obama won the white vote in 18 states and DC: CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN. NH. NY. OR, RI, WA, WI and VT. Obama's lowest percentage of the white vote he received in a state that he won: NC (35%). The highest percentage of the white vote Obama received in a state he lost: MT (45%)."

1. I really don't see Artur Davis winning the governor's race
The black vote would have to be over 50% for him to win, and that's not possible. Those are some die hard racists down there. Davis would be better served by joining Obama's cabinet in some form if he was unhappy being in the House.

2. I'm confused
I thought OK was the only state in the union where all the counties went red. No blue anywhere.

Wouldn't THAT suggest fewer votes for Obama, then? As in NONE?

There are parts of the south where the white population is evidently still stuck in the segregation era. I wasn't expecting anything great from many southern whites; after all, Kerry and Gore only managed about 20-percent of the white vote in states like AL and MS. But I was assuming that at least 20-percent of the whites in these states were stronger Democrats than they were racists, and figured Obama would at least pull those voters, even if he lost most southern states solidly. Evidently, I was giving southern whites too much credit. It's just pathetic to me that the majority of the folks in some parts of the country are still where they are at this point in our nation's history. And there really is no good excuse besides race for why this took place. John Kerry was a more liberal candidate than Barack Obama, so anyone who claims that their switch from '04 to '08 was based on ideology, is either lying or ignorant.

6. It's all about education
Those states are some of the least-educated states in the country. Remember that chart that showed the blue states and the red states along with their education ranking, and the entire top half was blue and the entire bottom half was red? It's no coincidence, that's for sure.

They might be ignorant, but people here are pretty smart (test scores and graduation rate toward the top in the nation).

7. i lived in alabama for a couple of years and spend about 2-3 months a year on business there.
that doesn't surprise me one bit. they are some strange and crazy people down that way.

jefferson county, where birmingham is, did go blue. and i believe the counties along what's called the Black Belt, about 2/3 of the way down the state, went blue.

Thinking of taking a driving trip there, just to gain some understanding of that part of the country. Does that sound like a good idea? Any suggestions?

9. I am living in Alabama and voted for Obama
but i would not doubt that the figure regarding this is correct.
I did see something that might inspire hope for the the future; the electoral map that was going around on some political news sights the other week showed what it would have looked like if the 18-29 vote was all that was counted and on that map Alabama was a blue state. Maybe there is hope for a more Democratic swing here as the years progress

the same way. While I did not doubt the polls here, I was pleasantly surprised by the # of Obama signs vs McCain here in Tulsa

25. Signs don't vote
I live in the reddest of red state of Utah. I proudly displayed my Obama/Biden signs, and was encouraged by the ratio of signs for Obama. The facts did not support my expectations. It was about 66/32 for McCain. On another note, I canceled my 30 year subscription to my hometown (county) newspaper today because as of last night's edition, they still have not mentioned Obama being elected President other than in passing as a comparison to McCain's great win in the County. They did, however, print a full color photo of the county showing a sea of red with only one small precinct going blue for Obama (this town has less than 50 people). The Church has a tremendous amount of influence on the vote in this state. They can deny it all they want, but the facts speak for themselves (think Prop 8).

11. How do these figures compare with the usual voting patterns in presidential elections?
The exit polls show that only 35% of white voters in NC voted for Obama. How does that compare to the usual percentage of white voters supporting the Democrat?

17. In particular, how do Obama's 13 lowest-white-voter-pctg states campare to Kerry's
ti Kerry's and to Gores's?

In the past three elections, the Democratic candidate has been a white Southerner, a white Yankee, and a Black Yankee.

28. Someone gave me a link, and Kerry got 19% of the white vote in Alabama in 2004
so the fact that only 10% of white voters chose Obama in 2008 is a definite sign of racism, imo.

I haven't checked the other states yet.

14. I'm proud of Kentucky and West Virginia!
Even though they are are almost entirely white and hold (according to polls) the most racist views in the country, about 40% of them still voted Obama. Many of them set aside bigotry and voted for the best man for the job.

15. Interesting note here:
I compiled all the state by state exit poll data as well as total vote numbers into an excel spreadsheet and crunched the numbers and when you exclude the south Obama won the white vote 50.5% to McCain's 49.5%.

When you include the south Obama lost the white vote 43% to 55%

(I defined the south as TX, FL, GA, VA, NC. SC, MS, AL, LA, OK, AR, KY TN, WV)

21. What a surprise! But seriously, that means nothing unless we know how many whites are NOT Repubs.
If 95% of the whites are Repubs, then Obama did pretty well.

I keep reading these stats about whites and black and hispanics. That is only part of the story. To mean something the stats have to tell us how many were in the pool that COULD have voted for Obama (non-Repub whites), since Repubs more so than Dems vote party line, esp. in the south.
