LOL....just heard that some "insiders" in the Kerry

campaign are suggesting that the release of the National Guard documents controversy is really a Republican campaign trick.

(Last report on MSNBC....don't fuss at me for watching cable news...I KNOW the problems, but I am one of those who think that we had better know what the other side is doing and saying at all times, for our own protection.)

I think McAuliffe has already been reported to say "talk to Karl Rove..."

I want to see the documents in Dubya's file that they say gave him permission to skip out the rest of his service.

NPR just pointed out that the first questions re: authenticity based on superscripts and proportional fonts appeared on the Powerline blog before the documents were available on-line, and while 60 minutes was still on the air. It then stated that such subtle nuances simply couldn't be gleaned from the brief glimpses of the documents shown on TV. The clear implication was that this was a set-up -- someone knew about telltale problems with the documents before the documents were available for inspection.

BTW, American Spectator had a story online last night saying that the Kerry campaign passed on the documents because it couldn't authenticate them. Surprizingly, it made the Kerry Campaign look good!

The spin has since started. The story has been edited and revised so that it now suggests that the Kerry Campaign, while suspecting the documents to be false, nevertheless passed them on to 60 Minutes to let it do the "heavy lifting."

I hate to say it, but it seems that the community of forensic document experts is largely in agreement that the document is likely a hoax. Kerry must distance himself, and affirmatively confirm on the record that his campaign had nothing to do with the questionable document being passed to 60 Minutes. He needs to publicize the fact that he had discounted the document as unreliable. He can take the high road here, and let others continue to hound Shrub about his lack of military service.

It has a new post Hindrocket where he claims that "an informant, meanwhile, has a theory about how Rather got the forged documents: keep an eye on Ben Barnes." Love the assumtion that the lie is a proven truth.

Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian. The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign. "More than a couple people heard about the papers," says the DNC staffer. Powerline is also the source for: "I'm sure that Ben Barnes' claim of having interceded to place President Bush in the Texas Air National Guard as a favor to his family is a hoax. What I'm not sure about is whether this report is correct: woman alleging herself to be none other than Amy Barnes, daughter of fromer Lt Gov Ben Barnes called into a Texas radio program being hosted by well-known host Monica Crowley. The woman, stating that her politics differed greatly from her Fathers, stated that he informed her months ago that he was going to "go public" with this story, known to be false. She claims that he has acknowledged the untruthfulness of this story to her over the years. She claims that there are two motivations for his doing this. One, to gain publicity for a book he is writing and, 2 the desperation of the Kerry campaign at this moment in time. Apparently Barnes offered to carry this tainted water if it appeared necessary in the general election to help secure a Kerry victory.I cannot personally verify the woman's identity, although Barnes does indeed have a daughter Amy. Other Poerline gifts to the media - that the GOP sold to the media by selling the powerline blog says so, so it must be true line (and this sale to the media was reported in the ABCNote today) - are:


1. The format used in this letter, dated 04 May 1972, which was
allegedly prepared/published 16 months prior to Lieutenant Bush's request for discharge, is completely wrong, as the letter is formatted in a manner that was not used by the Air Force until the very late 1980's/early 1990's.

2. The terminology "MEMORANDUM FOR" was never used in the 1970's.

3. The abbreviations in this letter are incorrectly formatted, in that a period is used after military rank (1st Lt.). According to the Air Force style manual, periods are not used in military rank abbreviations.

4. The abbreviation for Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS) includes periods after each capital letter. Again, periods are not used.

5. In paragraph 1, the phrase "not later than" is spelled out, followed by (NLT). NLT was, and is, a widely recognized abbreviation for "not later than" throughout all military services, so the inclusion of "not later than" was not a generally accepted practice and completely unnecessary in a letter from one military member to another.

6. Lt Col Killian's signature element is incorrect for letters prepared in the 1970's. This letter uses a three-line signature element, which was normally not used. Three-line signature elements were almost the exclusive domain of colonels and generals in organizations well above the squadron level.

7. Finally, the signature element is placed far to the right, instead of being left justified. The placement of the signature element to the right was not used or directed by Air Force standards until almost 20 years after the date of this letter.

None of the above is on point - meaning it is an excellent lie to use for blue smoke - but I really like the "MEMORANDUM FOR" was never used" - as if I didn't use that wording in the 60's.
