Any one been to change.gov lately???
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 09:18 PM by spokane
The agenda section is up and running, go read and get excited about
CHANGE.

one of my favorites;

Combat Employment Discrimination: Obama and Biden will work to overturn the Supreme Court's recent ruling that curtails racial minorities' and women's ability to challenge pay discrimination. They will also pass the Fair Pay Act, to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work, and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

and some more favorites;

End Deceptive Voting Practices: Obama will sign into law his legislation that establishes harsh penalties for those who have engaged in voter fraud and provides voters who have been misinformed with accurate and full information so they can vote.

End Racial Profiling: Obama and Biden will ban racial profiling by federal law enforcement agencies and provide federal incentives to state and local police departments to prohibit the practice.

Thank you... Thank you...

"The Supreme Court's recent ruling that curtails racial minorities' and women's ability to challenge pay discrimination?"

10. Was dumb struck to read that
must have been the ones that they sneak through late/early morning hours,
unbelievable the depth that the Bush administration went.

11. A law's one thing, a SCOTUS ruling another
If it was just a law I wouldn't be surprised at all, but even a conservative supreme court usually isn't that brazen.

12. That was the Ledbetter v. Goodyear case. She did an ad for Obama
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 09:27 PM by Pirate Smile
"At some point, the Goodyear Tire company is going to wish it had simply paid Lilly Ledbetter like a man. Instead, the company managed to turn the Alabama grandmother into the Democrats' poster child for the evils of a GOP-dominated Supreme Court and a powerful critic of John McCain. Last year, the court ruled against Ledbetter in a case she filed against Goodyear for paying her 40 percent less than men in similar jobs. The decision rolled back years of precedent and made it much harder for women to challenge pay discrimination in court. Members of Congress introduced legislation named after Ledbetter to remedy the problem, then failed to pass it. A star was born.

Ledbetter gave a rousing speech at the Democratic convention, and this week, she makes her debut in a series of Obama campaign ads blasting John McCain for opposing pay discrimination laws. Ledbetter is Obama's answer to Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman: a white, working-class woman who played by the rules and got screwed by GOP policies and judges on every level. In the Obama ad, she quotes John McCain dismissing the gender pay-gap by saying that women just need "more training and education." After noting that she had the same education and training as the men who made more than her at Goodyear, Ledbetter quips: "On the economy, it's John McCain who needs an education."

Ledbetter's story polls so well that the advocacy group People for the American way is also using her case in ads targeting seven Republican senators up for reelection, including New Hampshire's John Sununu and Minnesota's Norm Coleman, who voted to confirm Bush nominees John Roberts and Samuel Alito. PFAW is only one of a number of liberal groups hoping to make the future of the Supreme Court a major campaign issue. (The next president is likely to appoint anywhere from one to three new justices.) Today in a conference call, PFAW president Kathryn Kolbert noted that the Obama ads may be the first time that a Supreme Court case has been turned into a significant presidential campaign issue (aside from Roe, of course). it will be interesting to see who Obama nominates as soliciter general. Hopefully he/she is a good progressive.

6. Gender Identity

The phrase "gender identity or expression" is showing up a lot in Obama's policy statements, which is encouraging and I think somewhat overlooked.

8. The Fair Pay Act is way overdue
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 09:19 PM by Lorien
I was once told by a superior at one corporate job that "men need money because they need stuff" and that I and every other woman was being paid 35% less for the same job because we didn't have to work for a living, we could just "go and get married instead". I asked him to explain that to my mother, who had worked 60 hours a week every week to support my sister and myself when our dad ran off with another woman. He said "Well, couldn't she just get child support and live off that"? :eyes: the intentional obtuseness of many is mind blowing.
