As I posted I would do last night, I called a typewriter repair and used parts store in a major east coast city. Asked if he had an IBM Composer. He sighed and said, if you want to copy the gaddamn Texas memo use an IBM Executive Model D (which could easily do the superscript, the apostrophe, the centering, and the spacing) then copy it three or four times--the small differences in the fonts would be impossible to distinguish. Said he couldn't believe the hoopla, than ANY typewriter repair guy in the country could have told any reporter that.

So, if you have access to an IBM executive, knock yourself out.

On Edit: He also said "I don't know much about computers, but how would they get the bottom of the letters so uneven?"

19. They won't have to pay.The bounty was for doing it with an IBM *SELECTRIC*
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 05:19 PM by Walt Starr
The IBM Executive Model D is a completely different typewriter.

Hell, Most people realized a simple Selectric wouldn't even get close and the newer Selectra II was at a minimum the required machine for most of the features.

The person who put up the bounty knew damn well and good it was an IBM Executive Model D that was required and that an IBM Selectric would never be capable of duplicating the documents. It was a classic red herring.

Remember this post of mine and the difference between what was offered and the machine required when they say, "Well they were forgeries because nobody claimed the bounty!" The bounty conditions were very clear and require doing something which is impossible.

Day one on this thing I was SCREAMING the documents were typed on an IBM Executive. Took me 5 minutes of research on the internet to realize it met the requirements.

2. Thanks for posting...
I can't believe all the fuss about it. As if CBS wouldn't have double-checked and even triple-checked BEFORE they break such a story.

Bush supporters are so desperate that they turn a blind eye to all the evidence. They can't accept the fact that their "strong" leader is a little weasel who got into the National Guard through his daddy's connections, while others fought for America in Vietnam and spilled their blood for their country.

Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 03:33 PM by John_H
but it was a no-brainer for them to hit a competitor and defend chimp all in one shot.

CBS should call every diocument expert in the US to find out how many CNN talked to who said they were probably real, then do a story on CNN selecting their experts.

20. Great idea!
Then CNN could have a follow-up 60 Minutes special, detailing their investigation into CNN's and WP's lies. Then sue those bastards for slander.

6. Take heart - the more we hear about the dirty tricks and attacks,
the more we'll know for the next time...Rove is a young guy, we have years ahead of us for his filth and un-american tactics. Supposedly, all the people who try to counter the lies will learn and use what they learn to be better prepared and able to anticipate the tricks, dismissals, and put-downs.

In Rove's world - if you don't lie, you're weak. I will try to rely on all the Americans who have had it and don't want to see the country slip out from under their feet.

7. This will be where the goalpost is moved.
After all the hoopla, the next phase will be "So somebody forged it on a Selectric D."

The only real solution is for CBS to get and release the actual memos.

11. Even that would not satisfy the nay-sayers
The overall point is that four major things have been accomplished, all of the victories:

CBS took a stand for journalistic integrity and courage by going with the story in the first place.

CBS withstood an onslaught of lies and propaganda and didn't back down.

CBS proved that they were right.

All this hoopla reminded people of W's highly questionable service.

25. They can try...
... but it won't work.

They staked their smarmy reputations on these having been forged with modern technology. In fact, the only argument they had was that the docs couldn't have been created with 1970's technology.

If they try any other angle, they'll be met with the most appropriate derision, despite our State Media and their echo chamber.

That said, I do hope they go with it. Years ago, on a pre-Internet BB a poster said this:

"Republicans believe that anything worth doing is worth overdoing."

That's what bites their asses every time.

8. They didn't get the bottom of the letters uneven, they covered it up!
"Overlaying" the Word document over the typed document covered up the unique features of the typed document.

I screamed this over and over on DU the day the "forgery" bullshit started being spewed here.

I was one of the idiots up until 2 am arguing with freepers hopping around like manic chimps shouting "prove it prove it!" all night long.

They're all gone today. I think the bounty was up to something like $18k by the time I went to bed. Think they'll pay up?

17. There are legal precedents that say YES, you have to pay up
if you make and publicize an offer to pay a reward for something, then that thing is accomplished, you are legally obligated to pay for it.

It is a breach of contract NOT to pay.

If the freeps don't pay up, or whoever specifically made the offer, someone ought to sue their ass in whatever state that offer was made, for the 10 grand. If they don't pay up, then a lien against their house would work just fine.

Just sayin'. :hi:

21. Nope, because there is *NO WAY POSSIBLE* to fulfill the requirements
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 05:19 PM by Walt Starr
The bounty I saw specifically required the duplicate be done on an IBM Selectric. An IBM Executive is the model required, ergo, you cannot meet the requirements of the bounty.

It was a phony red herring to throw people off the track.

22. Well, I should've figured it was some dumbass freeper offer.
If they had any confidence in Smirk, they would've made a blanket offer to duplicate the memos with any typewriter available in the time period.

But of course, they don't wanna do that because deep in their hearts they know he was coke-snorting, slack-ass, smart-mouth, good-for-nothing rich kid that gave his military commanders nothing but a pain in their ass.

13. Thank you, John!
Of all the worries in our world ...

Meanwhile, as Bush* was screwing off, dismissing his oath of service, young men were being mortally wounded. The man had his military file destroyed, his original driver's lisence destroyed, and most likely police and court records as well.

Through the grace of bad luck for him, it is now biting him in the butt. He is not even denying the CBS revelations, but all the right can do is focus on the Selective typewriter.

Are they all nuts and sick in the head? Are they so badly brainwashed not to see that that Bush* does not identify with them? They are both different species. Bush*, despite his down home 'charm' is in and from another world. These people will never be in that world. That world has eventual plans to destroy their way of life!

But yet, they continue to coddle the dismal cowboy puppet and his cowpokes wrangling his lasso. And, they don't see it! They don't see he is a fake, a fraud and a liar! How sad. How very sad. For them and for the rest of us.

We've suffered enough! I've had enough! I will fight tooth and nail to the bitter end.

Meanwhile, over in Iraq, our young men and women are suffering, they are getting sick, they are getting wounded and they are dying! And, all the GOP and their rabid blind followers can do is dismiss the facts, hone in on typewriters! Next week, they'll come up with something else. If only they'd put that energy into honest critical thinking.

< If only there were a SIGH emoticon >

All we need is for someone to reproduce the memo exactly using one of those old typewriters, and presto.

26. They'll cling onto the fonts because they know that lie is all they have.
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 06:40 PM by John_H
They'll say the fonts look slightly different, which they will since the CBS docs could have been coppied on a 1976 Xerox, darkness set to 7, then on a 1999 Cannon set to 4.

The Executive can do the "fancy" stuffthey say couldn't be done and it's font was similar enough to need a first generation document to tell the difference for certain. Anyone who can't be convinced by those facts alone is voting for the chimp anyway.

http://defeatjohnjohn.com/2004/09/10000-part-two-ibm-selectric.htm

Read it and weep. As a red herring, they REQUIRED you duplicate the document on a model incapable of performing the functions required to duplicate the document.

They want it done on an IBM Selectric. As your contact told you, an IBM Executive Model D is required.

24. They think WE are lying
That is the problem. The Freepers and Bushoids think that people who criticize Bush are DELIBERATELY lying. This because only a liar would criticise our commander in chief, Jesus' chosen President.

How do you reason with someone like that? I don't think you can.

All you can do is beat them.
