Dreams from my father v. Audacity of Hope: Which one did you prefer?
And of course this is directed to people who've read both books (if it wasn't obvious from the question). I know the books aren't the same "type" of book, but from the standpoint of what you've learned about PE Obama from his own writings, which one is better in your opinion and why.

1. Dreams of my father read more like a novel.....
and dealt with his childhood.

He even gets into a couple of his relationships with women he had before meeting Michelle.

In other words, it was more revealing of Obama the person....so I preferred it.

3. Yeah, Dreams was beautifully written. But Audacity was pure Obama too.
I don't know, of course Michelle is more prominent in Audacity, as a more established constant in his life when he reflects on his personal life. In Dreams, it was like she was his beginning. Yeah, I wonder who the rich girl who had the voice like a chime was? Dreams is deeper, in my opinion. It is not only beautifully written, it is so honest.

2. Glad you asked this
I'm reading Dreams From My Father right now and it is taking me a LONG time to get through it. I guess the other one took awhile as well, but it seemed to be more general, where DFMF seems to really hit specific history in his family.

So far, I lean toward the AOH, but I couldn't say for sure until I finish the other one.

4. How long have you been reading Dreams?
I admit, I bought it, read a bit, sat it down and didn't come back to it for awhile, and then read a bit more on and off.

10. My wife bought it for me about a month ago
and I'm about half way through it. I'm essentially doing the same thing. The goal is to have it done before Obama is sworn in.

Late Jan and Feb I'm off for vacation, so I'll have quite a bit of time to read. Six whole weeks of vacation.

I'm thinking a beach in The Philippians ought to work well into that plan.

5. This is like choosing between chocolate and peanut butter...
... how can you seperate the two? :)

If you had asked me this months ago I would have said "Dreams" but I find myself consulting "Audacity" more and more as he begins his administration.

Yeah.... I cant decide.

I know one thing, the ONLY thing I have to look forward re: the eventual end of his two terms as President will be the next book. I cant wait to see how the story continues. :)

6. "Dreams From My Father" is a meditation on autobiography...
"Audacity of Hope" is a meditation on policy
the former is better literature

7. First of all, I am thrilled to have a president who can write a book
and then such good books as well.

What could W write? How to pick your nose 32 different ways with just photos?

Anyway, I loved Dreams and appreciated Audacity.

8. I read Audacity of Hope first
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 01:48 AM by rufus dog
and preferred it, to me it was a vision for all of us.

Dreams was a vision into what made and shaped Obama. Interesting to understand his perspective.

I read Hope in one day, Dreams took me a few to read. To me there is no comparison. Although Dreams illustrated his failures and shortcomings, which was very refreshing in an autobiography, and provided me with an understanding of the man, Audacity of Hope provides a guide to what is possible from all of us.

12. Preferred the first book, Dreams
a better read - more relatable. And, I feel, offered more insight into the character and background of 44.

13. The first one was much more readable to me, with occasional forays into poetry.
The second one seemed less genuine, although still important to understanding who he was.

15. Audacity
I have to go back and finish Dreams. Maybe I'll change my mind when I've completed his first.
