Has any president ever snorted blow?
Bush may be the first. There were some kinds of charges v Clinton in this regard (Mena airport etc) but no real attack leaving me to believe that he didn't. He and Hill (call me naiive) strike me as pretty square in this regard. The Holy Grail of the AWOL story is a definitive revelation that Bush did coke. It's standard now to say pols smokedc grass - but C is another matter. I think it would have a real negative impact on his base.

4. Wouldn't it be a sort of X factor
if if were to be determined that he did (i know he did) to a undeniable degree. What would the public do? I think it could really sink him. The OUI charges hurt him in 2000.

6. US Grant was the first General Lincoln could get who actually
could win something and he wasn't known to be sober a lot. In fact great thing on history channel not too long ago. If it wasn't Grant drunk it was Sherman and they helped each other through the bad times.

7. Also (P.S) I don't think the Christian right really, really knows
about his coke. I think a lot of them truly have no idea and think he only drank (maybe at most a little smoking weed) and others think that was an awful untrue charge about him even if he was a drunk at one time. I don't think "coke" all over the papers would sell with a lot of the church ladies and the church families who are trying to tell their children never ever do drugs. What would they be able to say: hey, kid, I guess it's okay to snort, shoot, blow and drink but for Christ's sake when you get to be about 40 start lying about it if you want to be President.

8. drugs were legal in the 19th century
I wouldn't doubt that some of our Presidents in the 19th century imbibed in some of the patent medicines of the day that contained cocaine etc.

25. Laudanum
(snip)

Laudanum was a wildly popular drug during the Victorian era. It was an opium-based painkiller prescribed for everything from headaches to tuberculosis. Victorian nursemaids even spoon fed the drug to cranky infants, often leading to the untimely deaths of their charges.

Originally, Laudanum was thought of as a drug of the working class. As it was cheaper than gin it was not uncommon for blue-collar men and woman to binge on laudanum after a hard week's work. Use of the drug spread rapidly. Doctors of the time prescribed it for almost every aliment. Many upper-class women developed habits.

27. And JFK allegedly offered to get her some coke...
"Late July, 1962: While the First Lady is away at the Kennedy summer home in Hyannisport, Mary calls on JFK at the White House. She records the visit in her diary, and later describes it to her close friend James Truitt of the Washington Post. She and the President of the United States smoke two joints of marijuana, reportedly prompting the leader of the free world to say, "This isn't at all like cocaine. I'll get you some of that." Once he is suitably "loosened up" -- Leary has emphasized the need to put subjects in a "benevolent state" before turning them on -- Mary dispenses to Jack a dose of LSD. As it starts to "kick in," he goes out and stands on Harry Truman's balcony overlooking the rose-garden fountain, a soothing sight before him...."

From an old article in Grand Royal magainze that claims Leary was a CIA agent. http://home.dti.net/lawserv/leary.html

11. The so called Bible Belt folks
Will have some difficulty with the image of GWB, straw up his nose, sucking up a line (and then another, and then another, for say 20 years).

Cocaine is a nasty drug, and I think while this would make middle America squeamish, this may really resonate with the independents, especially those who have had casual contact with, or even used, cocaine.

Even though we at DU have known about this story forever, this will be brand spanking new information to a lot of other people who may not have decided to vote one way or another.

18. The timing is pretty good right now

Labor Day is over, kids in school, no major holidays.

Any stuff that they hear about now will be around for the rest of the election.
I remember the Arrrrold campaign. The LA Times story broke right before the election. The rethugs slammed the Times saying " last minute smear on poor little Arrrnold.

They will still say it is a smear and LIES but it can all be discuss way before Nov. 2nd

19. Would RimJob denounce the Chimp?
And demand that all his fellow Freeps did the same?

(if you haven't seen it, RimJob posted a blistering rant against cokehead presidents and the hypocrisy of drug laws over in Freeperville back in 1999 when dipshit's campaign was just getting started. As much as I hate to say it, it was a good rant.)

20. maybe Taft
"Before delivering my address I went to consult Dr. Dean, a throat specialist, who blew me out as Dr. Richardson does. I fancy these fellows put some cocaine in their treatment. I went again to Dr. Dean to be treated, in order that I might speak to about 4000 people... I rode about Minneapolis for a while in an automobile, went to a throat specialist who blew me out, and got back to Senator Washburn's in time to dress for dinner."

21. I think the right knows
My students have been talking about it, so it's not just the DU crowd. What we need to be careful about is to emphasize not just the fact that he did it, but his hypocritical stance against others who do it. We need to connect it to the theme of one rule for Bush, another for everyone else. Otherwise you'll get young people voting for him because he's a cokehead, to quote my kids.

22. Excellent point...GWB is harsh about drug use and penalties
And the incarceration rate for drug users has exploded over the last few years.
Great LTTE's today in Denver Post regarding the US govt's drug policy. A little bit of light on GWB's double standard. MKJ
