And the RatherGate's connected to the NigerGate ...
I asked a Bush supporter why it matted if the documents were forgeries as it wouldn't change the agreed upon fact that Bush was suspended for missing a physical and he took advantage of the soft bigotry of low expectations for blueblood National Guard members.

He replied with a rhetorical question, "Kind of calls into question the rest of the argument doesn't it." So who has benefited from the forgeries, if they are indeed forgeries? And even if they're not? Jr.

The White House distributed the CBS documents themselves.

I remember this administration dealing in forgeries not too long ago. Uranium, Niger, forgeries, 16 words, that stuff.

Karl Rove planted the bug on himself while working on a campaign in 1986.

This smells like the same crap on a different day.

1. OK, I'll bite. If they aren't forgeries, how does JR benefit?
I'm missing how that could help Shrub. If they were forgeries, I understand, but not the other side!

2. Same Question
If you are going to discredit the truth use an element of truth to create a lie. Maybe and just maybe when some one takes the bait later finds out it is fabricated they will stop asking questions. People do not like to get burned twice. This could still turn out to be an elaborate ruse to discredit true events.

3. Nobody is denying their content:
That Bush was suspended and got special treatment so he could work on the campaign.

These documents didn't reveal anything new. It's the perception that they're forgeries that benefits Bush.

Whether they're forgeries or not doesn't change the reality of what they describe. But to some people - particularly those unfamiliar with the charges outside of these document, it seems to.

Think about it:

"Bush was suspended from flying because he didn't take a physical."
"That's not true. Those documents that said that were forgeries."

The fact is the "forgery" story has buried real story. Rove wins the battle.

4. Divide and conquer
While the issue of forgery manages to bury the truth the news media becomes reluctant to place trust in their sources. I do have a strong suspicion that CBS has a few aces up their sleeve. There was some mention of an unimpeachable source. CBS knew they would create a firestorm and leave the weaker networks eating their dust. This will make good drama and CBS gets to be a major player in this election.

5. oe thing that would put the matter to rest
Is if FOIA requests turned up other documents, which could be ...

- requisition forms for typewriters that would produce the text in question
- other documents showing the same characteristics from the same time period

I read CBS has some of the 2nd, but I haven't seen them yet.
