Washington, DC – Today the American Security Project praised the appointment by President-elect Barack Obama of ASP board members Susan Rice and Greg Craig to be Ambassador to the United Nations and White House Counsel, respectively. In response, ASP Chairman and former Senator Gary Hart, and ASP President Vice Admiral Lee Gunn, USN (Ret.), issued the following statement:
“The American Security Project applauds the appointments of our colleagues, Dr. Susan Rice as Ambassador to the United Nations and Mr. Greg Craig as White House Counsel, by President-elect Obama. Their experience, knowledge, and firm commitment to a new bipartisanship are needed to meet the challenges we face as a nation,” stated Hart.
“Dr. Rice’s commitment to international collaboration to meet key challenges has been on display to those of us involved with ASP for some time. As a member of our board, Susan has demonstrated to us the judgment and the skill that will be needed to forge international consensus and common response on key challenges from Darfur to climate change,” continued Hart. “The United States could have no finer emissary to the United Nations.”
“Mr. Craig’s commitment to the rule of law is known to everyone who has had the privilege to work with him,” stated Gunn, a former Inspector General of the Department of the Navy. “In his time as a member of the ASP board of directors, Greg has contributed mightily to our deliberations as we have thought through how best to counter the terrorist threat without compromising our values as a people. The country is fortunate that someone of his skill, intelligence, and values will serve as White House Counsel.”
“We commend our colleagues on their accomplishments and look forward to continuing our work with them, as well as the new Administration, on a new bipartisan approach to national security that will make us all safer,” said Hart.
