Stop telling me NC is not blue.
A few people have told me that North Carolina is not really a blue state. We went for Obama and have a new Dem senator. So don't tell me we are not a blue state don't try to rain on my and others parade. For now we are blue damn it and that is the end of that.

1. Democratic Governor and majorities in the State Senate and House. Treasurer, Sec of State, and AG
Edited on Thu Dec-04-08 05:40 PM by BrentTaylor
All Democrats.

What else do we need to be considered Blue?

No worries on that other US Senate seat. Burr can't beat Easley, Cooper, Shuler, or Moore

4. As long as it still has the letters R, E, or D in its name, it's still a RED state.
Why do you think Ohio and Iowa are now blue? It's all in the letters! :P

7. It's really a purple state
There are pockets of progressives but they're relatively small.

Lots of the elected Dems are more conservative then Repugs in other areas.

But who really cares?

We have great beaches, mountains, and George Clinton was born here. (So far no highways named after him)

11. It is not a blue state
I lived there for many, many years and my family still does live there, so I'm not just shooting off my mouth.

If it WAS a true blue state, Haruka and I would be Tarheels. Certain laws need to be passed and certain attitudes changed in more places than RTP, Charlotte, and Asheville.

But, it's a good start.

12. Its turning blue
This last decade there's been a tremendous influx of people from the northeast and midwest, coupled with an explosion in hispanic growth.

The natives are still predominately conservative though.

14. NC is a former red state, now a swing state, that's turning bluer over time
NC is by no means a solid blue state, and isn't a 'leans' blue state yet, but it's definitely moving in the right direction of becoming a swing state in close elections.

NC elected democrats to the governor's mansion, senate, and presidency by very slim margins in all of the races last November, however since it was a heavily democratic year (with a 6 or 7 percent win for us nationally) that shows that we can't call it a blue state yet.

Virginia however we won by like 6%, so while it's certainly a swing state that's going bluer now, you'd have more room to argue it's a blue state then NC and it's narrow margin.

But back to NC, I agree that NC can DEFINITELY become a solid blue state if it's current changing demographics, and the demographics democrats are winning/improving their margins in, continues.

In NC a few core groups are helping us gain ground there.

-A large influx of out of staters, who tend to be more liberal and more likely to vote democratic then the natives of the state.
-A large black population, but not so large to the point that the democratic party in the state is mostly just black people.
-An increasing number of wealthier and college educated whites who are professionals.

Much as I know liberalism is about helping the poor less educated blue collar workers, the fact is those kinds of democrats are moving to the GOP more and more lately from cultural issues. That's not a complete loss for us however, since the size of that group of voters is shrinking overtime.

At the same time white professionals are moving more and more in our direction, and their numbers keep on growing as the number of people attending colleges increases and we become a more educated workforce. Even though it might seem that this group would benefit more from voting republican due to being richer and getting tax cuts instead of tax raises the fact is they're more socially liberal, and motivated by things other then money (but the republicans will never understand that, since tax cuts are their solution to practically everything).

16. Really? My mistake then. Let me rephrase that
NC's governor, senate, and presidential races were all showing democrats winning by very small margins leading up to the election, though Hagan started to pull away close to the election after being behind and considered a long shot for most of the campaign.

Plenty of political pundits said the governor's race could go either way, and I recall polls being kind of mixed but with a slim Obama lead overall leading up to the election.
