It astounds me how people here and elsewhere are already trashing Obama with over 40 days before he even gets sworn in as President.

Lots of whining... lots of hand wringing... lots of wild-eyed projection and conjecture before he even walks into the Oval Office to sit down and click on his laptop.

I can't say that I'm surprised. In this ever-the-instantaneous World where people cry like babies when their net connection is flaky for 30 seconds, it was apparent to me that Obama's historic victory was going to be a three-day story and we would all be jonesing for some new story after a long 72-hour period of election victory.

There has to be something to bitch about... it's like staring at a puppy's eyes to see what infinite wisdom and direction it should bring us... the puppy's boundless energy and frenetic, untrained wildness is like our attention span. Run! Stop! Piss! Shit! Run! Bark!

Or maybe put the restless aimlessness under control...

Obama will face miles of destructive policy ruin from Bush when he walks into the Oval Office door. We know. It's the bloody Constitution on the floor bleeding from several wounds in one corner. The economy is strapped to a booby-trapped chair staring like a kidnapped prisoner after being beaten about the head from Reagan policies that were administered since that time. The two major wars are raging like a couple of rabid bloated dogs with fangs ready to eat each other and anything in their path. The American people, while hopeful, are wearing rags underneath their cheap overcoats. The rest of the World waits for a dozen miracles to come from us in the first week.

Meanwhile, the television infotainment Ken and Barbie dolls await their scripts from their corporate masters, who are petrified of change and know just what to do. The greasy wheels are ready to roll over anything in the corporate masters' way.

Additionally, the Republican Party looks at the piles of ruin and treachery of the Bush years left behind for Obama to now own as a chance to twist and turn it all against him and the Democrats. They know the television infotainment Ken and Barbie dolls will deliver the bad news like good little puppets and they know most of us have three nanoseconds for an attention span.

So what do we do as Democrats? Start the circular firing squad before we even had a chance to try to unravel the secrets of the labyrinth of disasters left behind from the Bush cabal? Should we give up the effort before we even start? Should we never give Obama a real chance to try to do the nearly impossible in a four year period, let alone a two year period?

Probably not. It seems that not many people will ever be happy with literally anything... ever.

It's like an impatient teacher finding out that Einstein flunked a math class in high school and sends him to a reform school to get a lobotomy...

The economy will have started to turn around by then. I refuse to believe that a $500 billion stimulus plan with have no effect.

I don't think the economy will turn around until Obama's second term, at the earliest. In my state of MI, it probably won't turn around until after Obama finishes his two terms

I know that she hasn't taken office and will not do so for another 8 years. She probably won't even announce her candidacy for another 6 years. But can you believe the horrible lack of vision and bad judgment on her part.

On the other hand, by 2012 the economy should be reveed up again which will give the advantage to Obama. It will be like 1982 and 1984--Republicans lost seats in '82 due to the recession, but by '84 the economy was moving ahead and Reagan won in a landslide.

We may drop a few in the House, but we have enough of a cushion there now to absorb a loss of about 10 seats.

Their 2004 victories were narrow & blue state heavy. They have too many seats to defend--they won't gain much. It's the 2012 election we need to worry about losing seats in.

'98 and '02 were two midterm elections in which the president's party gained ground, so the traditional idea that the president's party always loses ground in the midterm may not be as hard and fast of a rule as it was once thought to be. Also, even though the 2008 Congressional elections went quite well for the Democrats, it was not quite comparable to some of the insane "wave" elections from the past in which the newly elected president's party won a bunch of seats that otherwise would not have gone to a member of that party. '04 did not go well for us, so there aren't a lot of Democratic Senators up for election in '10 that are on shaky ground, and we don't have many Democratic representatives defending impossible-to-hold seats, either. We lost a handful who won in '06, but most survived their first race as an incumbent. Generally, if a rep can make it beyond that point, minus a giant opposition party wave or a scandal, they are able to hold on to their seat indefinitely.
