This proposed special election, is it going to be just Democrats?
Or will Republicans get to run in it?

1. Aren't the Republicans pushing for a special election? You decide.
I think they should get the Lt. Governor sworn in ASAP and he can appoint the Senator as is customary.

2. No. It is the Senior Democratic senator from Illinois - Durbin.
And if we are so afraid of elections results, then perhaps we do not deserve this seat.

4. No one talked about being afraid. I'm saying they
shouldn't keep changing the rules. That's what leads to corruption because it blurs the lines of accountability.

5. My bad. I thought he was a Republican. Still he shouldn't
call for it. Now is the time to follow the laws and the rules more than ever.

6. Why wouldn't Republicans get to run?
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 07:55 PM by tritsofme
They haven't won a statewide race since 2002.

I don't think there is much to worry about.

7. Oh--you mean since George Ryan got busted for corruption?
Do you think maybe IL Dems are a little nervous right now? Especially given the fact that Blag the greedy asshole just exposed several prominent IL Dems to ridicule for possibly bidding on a Senate seat...

:eyes:

I hope the fucker rots in jail. He screwed our party hard.

8. So what are Republicans going to do? Run Jim Oberweis?
The only Republican that can win a state-wide race is Jim Edgar, and he has declined every time they beg him to run for something.

Maybe Mark Kirk could mount a competitive campaign, but I haven't seen very many indications he's interested.

Pat Quinn and Lisa Madigan leave this scandal completely untouched.

I don't think Blago hurt all that many people besides himself.

10. Oh, PLEASE let them run the Milk Nazi!
Maybe they can get Keyes to come back and run again...

Edgar is out of public life and there are two words that explain why: Kemper Insurance. There is no way that 11th hour deal of Edgar's will stand up to scrutiny. I would be amazed to ever see him run for office again.

It might be that the only thing saving the IL Dem party from being totally screwed is the fact that the IL GOP is actually in every bit as bad condition.

Pretty sad.

9. The fact is anyone appointed by Blago now is going to be tainted with corruption charges
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 08:13 PM by ShadowLiberal
At this point if Blago appoints someone it has to be a placeholder or else the person will be tainted with Blago's corruption when they run for reelection.

Holding a special election earlier then planned really isn't a bad idea in my opinion, why wait for two whole years to hold a special election? People who want to take a seat in the house that becomes empty have to run in a special election first before joining congress.

11. Unfortunately I think there is still a risk of a cloud
even with a special election, at least untill we know who "Sen candidates 1-5" were in the complaint. Media types constantly asking "Are YOU candidate number 5??!" "Are YOU candidate number 4??!!!" Nevertheless, I agree that letting Blago choose is the worse out of the o[tions
