Rally for Virginia kicked ass, my report
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 04:57 PM by JohnKleeb
So I arrived at Robinson HHS named after Fairfax County's First Fatality in Vietnam, its a huge school, way bigger than HHS, and there were signs everywhere, I arrived around the gym area, signed up to work on election day afternoon and some other stuff, got a brand new Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker and a Socas for congress one, and buttons for those campaigns. Soon there after they divided us in to the respected districts, the 8th, the 10th which is mine, and the 11th. The speakers were good, and James Socas who is running against Frank "1 foot shorter and 20 years younger than" Wolf. Also got a Kerry-Edwards T on the way out and theres gonna be a rally for Kerry-Edwards in Loundon next saturday.

What do you think Kerry's and Socas's prospects are in Virginia? I've heard it is somewhat conservative down that way. Do you think they have a chance?

3. Kerry has a good chance
Socas will do better than the guy who ran against Wolf last time, he's a good guy, and he made some great points about education, and made fun of Wolf bad heh. I am wearing my new Kerry-Edwards T right now :). I say Kerry could win down here, however he's gonna need help.

:) I try to do what I can, its hard though to be a man of your word when you're both intensely shy and a non driver, and when youre working hard your senior year, plus school projects in between, and etc. Thanks, i was glad to attend, James Socas is awesome, he couldnt take many questions though, so I didnt ask him to come to HHS :(, but he was great, this old guy asked if we could get someone to follow Frank Wolf around like the Clinton campaign had someone follow Poppy around hah. Thanks but I just try to do my job.

7. Heard that Fairfax County has a lot more Dems that it used to.
My sister lives there. She was reading the numbers to me the other day. I've been telling her all along that VA is a lot closer than she thinks. I think she is finally starting to believe me!

13. There was only a difference of about 2 percentage points
in Fairfax County (the difference used to be HUGE there). Loudoun County was not quite as close. I'll have to ask her where she got the stats.

Keep up the good work. VA is in play!

I'm glad you went. Good report.

We're having grassroots training "conventions" here in Maine next weekend. There's been a tremendous sign-up already.

Good for you for volunteering for election day! This is important work. Congratulations for doing your part. (When are you going to drive?)

Take care!

11. .

i read a memo written by the head of the virginia bush/cheney campaign. in it, he writes that virginia is competitive and in play.

those are strong words from a campaign head to insiders in a traditionally red state. i was mightily heartened to read them.

cheers :)

it seems crazy not to advertise there.

I think Kerry has almost as good a chance (maybe even better) than Az, which the campaign may be advertising in.

Of course they're not as vital as adverstising in places like Pa, Wi, Fl, and Oh.

29. And I need to get out too!
The Democrats are putting up three candidates against Sweeney. Who it is will be decided on Tuesday. Only one, Coleman, stands even the slightest chance, but I did see two signs for him, today, which is a good sign. Maybe I can do something for his campaign, if I can find out where it's located. I realize that his chances are slim to none, but Sweeney's got to realize that not everybody agrees with him and really should clean up his act. I have more letters back from him than anyone else, as a result of all the "actions" I take part in. He is excellent on animal protection issues, which you know mean a lot to me. But that's hardly good enough. He defended the Patriot Act, when I told him I opposed it, and backs the administration's policy about letting the AWB lapse, which is something I also feel strongly about. I was encouraged by the fact that he seems to be socially progressive, even though he's a Republican, but then I learned that he flew to Florida in 2000, to take part in the recount intimidation there. If he supports this illegal administration this strongly, then the man has really got to go.:grr:

31. That's certainly my hope
But I don't think it's likely, I'm sorry to say. This is the first time, in a long time, that the Democrats have even bothered to run someone against him. And there was an article in the local paper, last year, with the headline that he could have this job for life, if he wanted it. But we have to try to give him a run for his money. The Republicans around here have run unopposed for too long and are just too complacent.:-(

35. Well, that certainly doesn't seem right
If James Socas can promise one, he could run on that. People tend to vote based on issues that affect them, personally. Nobody pays much attention to things like foreign policy or fiscal responsibility, unless they're having to pay more in taxes. But if somebody can get to work more easily because they can access the metro near their home, you've got them.:-)

33. Good for you, Kleeb.
I read in either American Prospect or Washington Monthly recently (we get something like six liberal rags, I seldom remember what I read where), that said Virginia was in play this year like it hasn't ever been for the White House. Even some of the more affluent counties might go for Kerry, the article said, because they're more traditional conservatives and they don't think Bush* is a 'real conservative' and they are more pleased with the tone Kerry projects.

You are part of the solid Democratic base and a genuine, sincere Kerry supporter, who is informed on the issues and the candidates and know what you are talking about. You are in the minority on this, but have the power to influence many others, since you know the facts and most just aren't paying attention, hard as it is for those of us on DU to believe.

42. I'm impressed, as well.
Most of these kids cannot even vote yet, but they put their heart and soul into a political campaign. If they were the norm, our country would be placed in good hands. But it is up to us, who are old enough to vote, to leave them any sort of country at all. If Bush* is allowed to be in charge for "four more years," I have a real fear for this country, and even our planet. After all, the North Koreans, who Bush* refuses to even engage, actually do have nuclear weapons, unlike a third-world country, Iraq, which he attacked. And the North Koreans already hated us. The Iraqis hate us, now. Who knows what's going to happen? A nuclear attack by North Korea or another terrorist attack by those Islamic extremists who were inspired by our attack on Iraq? I am terrified at the damage another four years of Bush*-Cheney could do. We need regime change at home. And these kids, who are working so hard, can help, but we all have to do our part. We have to leave them, and ourselves, a viable and trusted USA. We are so close to losing both.;(
