Obama names 7 gays to transition team
Gay groups considering Inaugural events
By LOU CHIBBARO JR, Washington Blade | Nov 19, 8:48 AM

Officials with President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team this week named at least seven openly gay people to transition panels assigned to review federal departments and agencies.

Three of the seven gays named to the transition panels — businessman Fred P. Hochberg, former San Francisco Supervisor Roberta Achtenberg, and labor attorney Elaine Kaplan — held high-level positions in the Clinton administration.

The Obama officials also named President Bush’s former ambassador to Romania, Michael Guest, to a transition panel assigned to review issues pertaining to the State Department. Guest became the nation’s second openly gay ambassador when Bush appointed him to the Romania post for a term lasting from 2001 to 2003.

Several national gay rights advocacy groups, meanwhile, were said to be considering whether to hold one or more gay-related events during the week of Obama’s Inauguration on Jan. 20.

During President Clinton’s inaugural festivities in 1993 and 1997, gay groups, including the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund — held as many as a dozen events, including a gay inaugural ball.

Gay choruses and gay marching bands also participated in some of Clinton’s official inaugural ceremonies. In 1993 and 1997, AIDS activists, at Clinton’s invitation, marched in the official Inaugural Parade while carrying cloth panels from the National AIDS Quilt.

They dropped the ball on this one. Sometimes it's hard for people who are in different shoes to imagine what another group is going through. They were there to provide the alternative view and they didn't. So now what?

4. Maybe they did.

Who knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Besides, I really would not want a bunch of his team publicly criticizing him in public before he is even inaugurated.

10. do you really think Obama would appoint so many openly gay
people to his transition team only to turn around and ignore their input?

I think the answer to my question is that none of the gays on his transition team have a problem with Warren doing the invocation.

I seriously doubt that he ignored their input.

But once its announced, he really can't rescind it, and I doubt the entire team participates in every decision.

Your instinct may very well be spot on. Unfortunately, we really don't have a positive way to know this information.

7. OR maybe all gays don't think alike?
Maybe Warren saying a 3 minute prayer doesn't bother them?

25. Looks like the new insult
to anyone who dares to think out of the box is "house gays," aka "house Negro."

Not a smart move!

I mean, it's hard for you to cry bigotry when you yourself use bigotry against others. Or to put in terms you might understand, that makes you a "house HYPOCRITE."

12. Obama's STRATEGY is not to Push Gay or others Rights Forward ...but to
"reach out for unity" and then stack the deck with Progressives that will REALLY WORK FOR...his POLICY OF CHANGE.. It's Stealth...and to defeat the Repugs maybe we should kind of think that Obama, backed by CAP just might pull it off if he keeps his head "low to ground" and manages to "duck the sniper fire?"

28. That's right! He's going to use all that "dry powder" the Democrats have been storing...
...throughout the Bush presidency. You just wait! By 2012, after
he's safely re-elected, he'll actually be ready to do the right thing.

(Do I really need a sarcasm tag?)

17. Does it matter?...
the thing is that people are angry and offended. That's it. The issue of having this man at the inauguration needs to be addressed. I would think that expressing ones objection in an email and sending it somewhere that it might make a difference would be the thing to do. But I guess that's just me.

whose permission I need to have an opinion on gay issues?

I'm not sure I follow your reasoning, such as it is.

21. It's also hard to criticize a boss...
...when that boss has already publicly advocated against your civil rights.

There is something to be said for working from the inside, though, and as Obama may be doing with Warren, these staffers may feel they can still halt this dreadful move--or bargain for something bigger later.

If you disagree strongly you should resign than speak out.
