When Obama includes the LGBT community in his inaugural address
Which I bet he does, will that have more of an impact than whatever Rick Warren says? I think it will.

And before people start jumping on me, please understand I have no use for Rick Warren or his bigoted views, but I don't think his inclusion is a sign that Obama is in anyway anti-gay or against choice.

But there's nothing meaningful about this. Just like there will be nothing meaningful IF Obama mentions gays.

2. Sure. But, the invocation is 'symbolic' only. We have to be
careful with symbols. What does Warren as the symbol mean? There are many others that could have been chosen. This choice doesn't make sense to me.

I do not foresee Obama being inclusive of the GLBT community in his inauguration. GLBTs are good enough to vote for him but not good enough to be included in the party platform.

In the late 70s I boycotted Florida orange juice until the growers in my state fired Anita Bryant as their spokeswoman ~ looking back, she was the first of these whackjob fundies to try to impose her views on the rest of us.

We still have a ways to go...

23. I don't blame Neville Chamberlain for the Holocaust, nor Ike for McCarthyism.
Of course Rick Warren isn't comparable to Hitler, but he is a 21st Century Orville Faubus. He's in that hate game, even if he plays his role with a big friendly smily on his mug. But like it was Eisenhower's job to stop a rabblerouser from trashing the civil rights of millions, and yet he did nothing, it's Obama's job to stop this snakecharmer from attacking the civil rights of gay Americans.

It's not the most important issue in the world--fixing the economy and exiting Iraq and sticking Osama bin Laden in a pine box are higher priorities, if such things can be quantified. But there's right and there's wrong; and right shouldn't give wrong a place of honor. Invite him to the White House photo op, sit him on a public panel--these are acceptable ways to be inclusive with those who we disagree with.

But don't give approval to someone who's mission in life is to shit on the people who elected you and then call that bridge building.

39. I believe
you are determined to think the worst of me and there isn't much I can say or do to change that.

I am not defending, justifying or minimizing anything. I just happen to not believe this Rick Warren shit is all that important, as I said in another thread, in the grand scheme of things. I don't like it, I'm not happy about it, but I'm not going to lose faith in Obama simply over Rick Warren giving some silly prayer at his inauguration. That's all I'm trying to say.

In other words, when Obama attended that Saddleback Forum with Warren, did the world change? Did we lose faith in Obama then?

I'm not sure if Warren sticks around after giving the invocation or not, but if he does, besides him, there will be plenty of other douchebags sharing the podium with Obama.

43. Agreed!
Really, I am not against people speaking out against Warren or his invitation to speak....not in the least bit...and going to change.gov is a constructive way to do it! I would be perfectly fine with his invitation being rescinded, I would welcome that with open arms! But if he does show up I'm not going to let it ruin the inauguration for me, but that's just me.

34. Choosing Rick Warren to give the invocation is a mistake. Obama can choose better.
I would expect Obama to invite gay rights groups to march in the parade, and I would expect him to mention gay rights in his address, or at the very least mention the need for equal rights for all. This is the minimum I expect from a Democratic president.

What I didn't expect was to have one of the most well-known homophobic preachers in the country featured in such a prominent role at the inauguration. I think that is a serious mistake on the part of Obama and his team, and I hope he reconsiders.
