Kerry on Afghanistan: simply surging the force won't solve problems in the nation.

Kerry: US must win hearts, too, in Afghanistan

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON – The United States can gain security by adding more troops in Afghanistan, but only if they work to gain the trust of locals, Sen. John Kerry told The Associated Press

The Massachusetts Democrat and incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee told the AP on Wednesday from Afghanistan that he plans to tell President-elect Barack Obama and National Security Adviser-to-be James Jones that simply surging the force won't solve problems in the nation.

Obama campaigned on a pledge to shift U.S. military resources from Iraq to Afghanistan, although military leaders have cautioned that differences in terrain, enemy and local customs reduce the chances for a direct replication of the gains achieved against Iraqi insurgents.

"If you add troops and have the strategy we've had, that won't get the job done," Kerry said after having breakfast early Thursday with U.S. forces. "But if you use the troops to give you the ability to do the real work more at the local level, the provincial level, making a difference in people's lives, then you have a chance to win over hearts and minds as well."

The senator said it's equally important for the United States to help stand up the Afghani police force as it is the nation's military force.

"They're going to have to recruit like crazy and train like crazy, but that's doable," Kerry said.

1. My neighbor worked as a plumber in Afghanistan for a year.
There wasn't much work. There was a lot of sitting around & drinking beer, according to him. But he did tell me that if we would spend some money on rebuilding schools, hospitals, "hell, even the roads!" it would go a long way to building relationships there.

Kerry said. . . "But if you use the troops to give you the ability to do the real work more at the local level, the provincial level, making a difference in people's lives, then you have a chance to win over hearts and minds as well."

I have no doubt that Kerry would have gone down as one of our finest presidents.

especially on foreign policy. The sentiment in those comments has been a constant since at least the time he was in Vietnam. It was likely part of the direction to which he wanted America to turn when he spoke in 1971. That was why it was not just that Bush would still be President that made the 2004 loss so hard, it was that no one has been on record as long or as clearly as Kerry on the need to turn from the foreign policy of the last several decades. The good news is that he will be one of the people that President Obama will listen to.

Here is a link to Kerry speaking of needing to do the same things on the West Bank, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXd66eae9K8 . Both the frustration that the Bush administration turned a deaf ear to him on this and the idealism, optimism and certainty that this would really work. His op-ed on Lebanon was similar - http://www.johnkerry.com/news/entry/a_crucial_time_for_saving_lebanons_fragile_democracy/ Throw in that he has made the strongest statements against torture of any person who has been called a serious candidate for President.

6. I agree that Kerry would have been one of our greatest Presidents, BUT
you don't have to be any kind of great thinker to see that what he says about Afghanistan is true.

It takes a true fucking idiot to screw everything up as badly as * has. Or a profit motive. :grr:

2. Kerry has been saying this for years, it's good that he'll soon have a President who will agree
Before Kerry, Biden and Hagel went on their trip to Afghanistan last year, there was this hearing on Afghanistan - http://foreign.senate.gov/hearings/2008/hrg080131a.html What you hear is that there is a lot of agreement between Biden, Kerry, Hagel and Lugar that the situation was getting worse and they needed to move in the direction Kerry was speaking of here.

5. Yes - I really hope that he will speak
of this trip on a Sunday talk show when he returns. Between the Poznan climate change talks, to India/Pakistan to Afghanistan, this has been a trip that touches on some of the biggest challenges we face.

It would be far more interesting than hearing more about Blagovitch or Warren.
