Caroline Kennedy: I'll Run in 2010 No Matter What
TIME reports:

She tells reporters in Rochester she would "absolutely" run for the seat in two years, even if Gov. Paterson doesn't appoint her.

Plus: The LA Times digs into the "back story for this saga of ambition, divorce and betrayal."

6. I don't wanta caretaker representing me, nor do I want someone to lose seniority
because they start in the Senate in 2011 instead of 2009.

Caroline Kennedy would make a great senator - I'd gladly take her here in Delaware and I have 2 dem senators.

2. Good for her. If I were in NY she'd probably get my vote.
I read her book The Right To Privacy. I want people who think like that in office.

4. So no matter who is picked, she'll force a primary battle? Great team player, huh?
I guess it is all about her, and not about advancing Democratic principles.

Your hypothesis is grossly flawed, given the recent outcome of this election year.

26. Your definition of self-funding differs from mine and that of the DSCC.
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 04:36 PM by ClarkUSA
Self-funding means having the ability to raise funds without having to beg the DNC, DSCC, DCCC, labor unions, EMILY's
List etc. in order to remain viable, thereby avoiding asking for too few resources split among many. In this respect, Barack
Obama is/was the best self-funded (largely via the grassroots, netroots, and The People) candidate in history.

Caroline Kennedy will have no problem getting the $40-50M needed to be competitive in the incredibly expensive New
York market against Peter King in 2010 (who has a warchest and the RNC) without tapping out the same political wells
that Gov. Patterson and other NY Democrats will be double-dipping into. Other candidates? Not so much.

27. Her definition of self-funding is that she can pay out of her own pocket.
Ted Kennedy was in NY last week making that argument to state Democratic party officials.

I am also sure that Ted Kennedy did not say what you said, either. I'd be happy to recant if you can produce a link, though.

Kennedy Is Said to Be Politicking for His Niece
Published: December 8, 2008
Editors' Note Appended

While Caroline Kennedy is maintaining her public silence about whether she wishes to succeed Senator Hillary Clinton, her uncle, Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, has been working behind the scenes on her behalf, according to Democratic aides.

In recent days the Massachusetts senator has called Senator Charles E. Schumer, as well as Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, who took over last month as head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee when Mr. Schumer stepped down.

Mr. Kennedy’s message, according to Democratic aides who were not authorized to discuss the conversations, is that Ms. Kennedy — backed by the Kennedy family’s extensive fund-raising network — would have the wherewithal to run back-to-back costly statewide races without having to seek help from Mr. Paterson or Mr. Schumer.

They're portraying her main qualification as her ability to hit up her friends for campaign dollars.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 06:04 PM by ClarkUSA
Are poor friends better than rich friends in politics? I'm sure politicians have both and ask both for support, if they're smart.
I'm not sure what you're saying?

13. It depnds - are there policy reasons to run against her? She's not saying it's a policy thing, it's
just about her - she will run no matter what kind of a job the appointed incumbent is doing.

It's called democracy... anyone can run if they want. Or not, if they don't.

Not sure why you think an incumbent is due any pass on what is a democratic exercise that is approved by 50 U.S. state legislatures.

20. Obviously, she can. If Obama is doing well, would we think well of a Dem who runs a primary campaign
against him in 2012? Of course not. We'd think it's unnecessarily divisive and distracting and hobbles us in the Generla Election against the Repbulicans. Kennedy is saying she'll run no matter what, even if the sitting Senator is very effective and has similar values. That makes clear that for Kennedy, it's all about Kennedy. That's not who I want representing me.

But I repeat, that's democracy. Why are you against the exercise of it? I'm not. In fact, I encourage it. If Dennis
Kucinich or Mike Gravel or Hillary wants to wage another run in 2012, fine.

I'm ready to rumble. ;-)

15. I never thought I'd see the day when the well educated, well spoken,
compassionate daughter of a martyred president would be treated so badly in the media and on this site. There are people in Congress today less qualified than Caroline Kennedy. It seems the objection in the media is that she's not a boisterous, hand shaking, career politician. I'm not sure I know what the objection is on DU. Was there a point where we became anti-Kennedy? After all the sexist cries over Hillary during the primaries, doesn't anyone think the response to Caroline Kennedy is equally sexist? She's being maligned because she has chosen to keep a low profile while raising her family. That doesn't mean she was sitting home knitting hats. I don't care who the New York governor appoints, but it would be nice if we'd stop eating our own.

has the advantage simply because of her last name.

22. No. She just appears to be the front-runner even though there are at least hundreds of
people in NY who would like the job, with more impressive resumes than hers.

39. name one who (a) wants the job and (b) would have the same immediate impact she would
In the culture of the senate, new senators rarely make an impact unless they have something that translates into political capital for other senators -- a reason for more senior members to seek out a junior member's support or to support a junior member's agenda. HRC had that -- her connections and fundraising ability gave her immediate standing in the senate. Jim Webb had it -- his military background made him someone other senators wanted to be associated with because it gave them credibility in an area that they might not otherwise have any. The overwhelmingly positive reaction to Caroline Kennedy's endorsement of Obama established that she has political capital. If you're an incumbent Senator from the midwest up for reelection, would you want to do a joint campaign appearance with Jerry Nadler (who is a terrific congressman) or with Caroline Kennedy? Which one would you cultivate as a "partner" by co-sponsoring legislation. Its called horsetrading and its how the senate works.

If you can name one person who has the level of political cache and capital that wants the job, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

.
.

If he opts not to select her, he can at least encourage her to run in 2010..

I sure don't envy the NY Governor. He has quite a list of qualified Democrats to choose from!
