Huffington Post has "Obama's Talking Points On Rick Warren"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/18/obamas-talking-points-on_n_152056.html
by Sam Stein

.......

• This will be the most open, accessible, and inclusive Inauguration in American history.

• In keeping with the spirit of unity and common purpose this Inauguration will reflect, the President-elect and Vice President-elect have chosen some of the world's most gifted artists and people with broad appeal to participate in the inaugural ceremonies.

• Pastor Rick Warren has a long history of activism on behalf of the disadvantaged and the downtrodden. He's devoted his life to performing good works for the poor and leads the evangelical movement in addressing the global HIV/AIDS crisis. In fact, the President-elect recently addressed Rick Warren's Saddleback Civil Forum on Global Health to salute Warren's leadership in the struggle against HIV/AIDS and pledge his support to the effort in the years ahead.

• The President-elect disagrees with Pastor Warren on issues that affect the LGBT community. They disagree on other issues as well. But what's important is that they agree on many issues vital to the pursuit of social justice, including poverty relief and moving toward a sustainable planet; and they share a commitment to renewing America's promise by expanding opportunity at home and restoring our moral leadership abroad.

• As he's said again and again, the President-elect is committed to bringing together all sides of the faith discussion in search of common ground. That's the only way we'll be able to unite this country with the resolve and common purpose necessary to solve the challenges we face.

• The Inauguration will also involve Reverend Joseph Lowery, who will be delivering the official benediction at the Inauguration. Reverend Lowery is a giant of the civil rights movement who boasts a proudly progressive record on LGBT issues. He has been a leader in the struggle for civil rights for all Americans, gay or straight.

• And for the very first time, there will be a group representing the interests of LGBT Americans participating in the Inaugural Parade.

......

Mods: Since this are "talking points" i posted all of them. I hope this does not go against the 4 paragraph max policy in quotes on DU.

10. Obama doesnt believe in gay marriage
Not with the same, "You're going to hell damn sinners!" mentality, but he doesnt disagree with Warren's general position on gay marriage.

Step 3. Find and replace "McClurkin" with "Warren."

Step 4. Send.

26. You got change
Bush surrounds himself with people who agree with him. Obama surrounds himself with people who have diverse opinions.

What did you want, a liberal version of Bush?

28. Disagreeing is one thing
Outright supporting relegating a significant portion of the populace to second class status is quite another thing.

9. Um, I would think that their disagreement on GLBT issues IS important.
Hopefully that bit was just poor wording and not the dismissal it appeared to be.

"kids" is right, this petty outrage over disagreement in Obama's approach and comparisons to bush is childish. :eyes:

23. If the standard is 100% agreement with Obama and us on positions...
Then I'm not sure who would qualify.

I'm sure, very sure, there are better choices, and I wish he hadn't made this pick.

But I understand the concept of bringing opposing views to the table.

I abhor Rick Warren, and there is a difference between sitting at the table and being given a prominent role at the inauguration.

I wish he hadn't done it, I think it's poor judgment, I'm sad that it's dividing us.

I've seen comments comparing Obama to Bush and Rove, and that's pretty disappointing.

And thank you for having a civil tone in your reply, I mean that.

30. Yes, I agree, I caught that the first time.
I specifically mention outrage over his approach, certainly not outrage over Warren's hateful positions.

Obama, for better or worse, has decided not to use a standard that many of us would, said standard being not to allow a person with those views to be a part of this event.

I'd rather he didn't but he has.

I'll retract my use of the word "petty", but my point remains the same, that comparisons of Obama to Bush and Rove are not productive.

Fighting amongst ourselves is not productive, there must be a better way.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 12:09 PM by dbonds
Warren should not be there. There has to be other leaders in that community that would be less offensive.

I don't want to make nice with those that would rather I be dead than see me have human rights. Giving one of their leaders a place of honor in a ceremony will not change their bigoted ways and only encourages them.

19. I have a great idea
He can also invite David Duke and Jesse Jackson to speak -- that should be a nice balance for the inaugural and will be very "inclusive."

Those flamboyant gays allowed to march, as the Invocation is given by a phobic, misogynistic piece of garbage.
