I think you people bashing Obama need to think about a few things.
• This will be the most open, accessible, and inclusive Inauguration in American history.

• In keeping with the spirit of unity and common purpose this Inauguration will reflect, the President-elect and Vice President-elect have chosen some of the world's most gifted artists and people with broad appeal to participate in the inaugural ceremonies.

• Pastor Rick Warren has a long history of activism on behalf of the disadvantaged and the downtrodden. He's devoted his life to performing good works for the poor and leads the evangelical movement in addressing the global HIV/AIDS crisis. In fact, the President-elect recently addressed Rick Warren's Saddleback Civil Forum on Global Health to salute Warren's leadership in the struggle against HIV/AIDS and pledge his support to the effort in the years ahead.

• The President-elect disagrees with Pastor Warren on issues that affect the LGBT community. They disagree on other issues as well. But what's important is that they agree on many issues vital to the pursuit of social justice, including poverty relief and moving toward a sustainable planet; and they share a commitment to renewing America's promise by expanding opportunity at home and restoring our moral leadership abroad.

• As he's said again and again, the President-elect is committed to bringing together all sides of the faith discussion in search of common ground. That's the only way we'll be able to unite this country with the resolve and common purpose necessary to solve the challenges we face.

• The Inauguration will also involve Reverend Joseph Lowery, who will be delivering the official benediction at the Inauguration. Reverend Lowery is a giant of the civil rights movement who boasts a proudly progressive record on LGBT issues. He has been a leader in the struggle for civil rights for all Americans, gay or straight.

• And for the very first time, there will be a group representing the interests of LGBT Americans participating in the Inaugural Parade.

To name a few.

of some outreach to the poor. And what has he really done for people in poverty?

Obama is showing that we should work to find common ground with others, even if they vehemently disagree on other issues.

6. You could make all those points if he included Charles Manson, but I'd still be pissed about it.
I'm not "bashing Obama," but I'm condemning his inclusion of a homophobe who has called me--all of us--Holocaust deniers and perpetrators because we believe in choice.

If Obama is serious about uniting, he does not need to be giving support to a divider.

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Clinton, D- N.Y., appeared Wednesday at a Capitol Hill press conference with conservative Republican senators Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and Sam Brownback of Kansas and conservative Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut to tout their request for $90 million in federal funds for research on how the Internet, i-Pods, and other electronic media affect children's emotional and behavioral development.

13. I've been keeping relatively quiet about Obama's choices so far
because I want to give him the benefit of the doubt since I realize he is facing monumental challenges. But this is beginning to get a little ridiculous. The very idea that you can work with Republicans is questionable in and of itself but when you start elevating frauds like Rick Warren in an attempt to "reach across the aisle" you're entering questionable territory yourself, IMO.

Clinton tried to include Republicans in his administration too, and just look what that got him -- even to this day.

14. LoZo, can you really not distinguish between criticizing and "bashing"?
You're trying to dumb down the conversation. No one doubts Obama will be a more "open, accessible, and inclusive" leader. The problem has to do with giving a singular honor to someone who has taken the lead in standing foursquare against equal civil rights for some Americans based on either (1) their sexual orientation or (2) their pregnancy status.

I think you're being intentionally obtuse here.

but he lost me when he went on to equivocate gay marriage with incest etc..

However as I ponder this choice, I wonder if Obama is looking to the future? Perhaps Mr. Warren will help us make a step forward on gay rights if Obama signs legislation down the road supporting Civil Unions? Or??

I dunno. The Warren thing has been tough for me to grapple with. But, I think you've made some points worth considering.

Thanks LoZo. :hi:

49. Oh, that's just a ridiculous example.
He's throwing religious people a bone . . . a measly two minute bone at that, and then ending with a minister who does support gay rights. He has to keep his support in the high numbers and then he can get the GLTB folks, and women and the poor. etc. the rights and policies and fair treatment they deserve. He can't just play to the base like the bonehead that's slinking out of the WH. It's a good move politically. He knows he can't wield a hammer to get important things to happen, he has to win over the support of the other side. He has to finesse it. One of the most, IMO, is reforming healthcare, and to be honest, people are dying with this fucked up system. Big picture, big picture.
