Kerry is FINALLY learning to sound byte his message
I thought that Kerry's comments, which I just heard on Air America Radio, about the gun control bill lapse was absolutely right on. For a moment, there, I thought I was listening to Clinton.

2. To paraphrase
"The president showed an absolute lack of leadership by letting his friends in the gun lobby dictate policy."

6. Another line on NPR (paraphrased):
"As a longtime hunter, I have NEVER needed to use an assault rifle on a hunting trip."

16. The joke's on him, then
His new advisors aren't telling him anything WE haven't been, LOL! He could have fired his old advisors, set up an account at DU, and invested the money he wasn't paying out in salaries into to a bigger media buy, LOL!

4. Excellent news - now we need to get him 10 seconds at 6 o'clock to offset
Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 12:25 PM by papau
the 10 minutes the media gives Bush and friends

But I am giving 10 to 1 odds that the media will voice over anything Kerry says as they whore their way to a 1968 type backlash.

5. He's halfway there
But he still has to condense and simplify these talking points into 5-second sound bytes. He has to take out the extraneous adjectives and make his phrases simple and blunt. It's sad but true that he has to dumb down what he's saying. He has to stop talking like he's giving a speech to professors and start talking like he's throwing back a few beers with his buddies. And he has to learn to stop saying "the president!" It should be Bush or George Bush.

For example:

"The president showed an absolute lack of leadership by letting his friends in the gun lobby dictate policy."

This is 29 syllables long and uses too many ivory towerish words..."policy"..."gun lobby"..."absolute." Plus, it subliminally implies respect toward Bush by referring to him as "the president." Its tone is dry, factual and academic.

It could be changed to something like:

"George Bush cares more about the NRA than he does about keeping our children safe."

This is simpler, 21 syllables, implies no respect toward "the president," and has an emotional overtone. The sheeple hear that and process it as "George Bush doesn't care about my childrens' safety." Hearing their children brought into the situation makes it very personal, and this simple sentence will stick with them.

It also: (1) spreads a meme and (2) is more likely to get mentioned in an AP headline.

Do you get what I'm saying? Kerry needs to boot out his fancy speechwriters and hire some from Redneck State College instead. Or else he needs to hire strategists who've taken Psych 101.

17. Glad to see some others here know how to go for the jugular.
You are absolutely correct, but I don't think Kerry has that kind of attack mentality. He's much too urbane and subtle. He respects the voters--always a DANGEROUS move.

18. Excellent, but you can chop even more

"George Bush cares more about the NRA than keeping our children safe."

Same meaning, three fewer words and even more headline-friendly.

One problem: Kerry probably is hesitant to bash the NRA by name, inspiring GOP rhetoric and inevitable commercials.

Terrific post, indy. Kerry's vocabulary and tone and rambling speeches have frustrated me all year. More=less. He is improving, but exasperatingly slow.

I like "Terrorist baby-killing bullet hoses" better.

If you're going to go with hype why not go all the way?

Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 01:05 PM by indyjones1938
Part of it is because the media whores only cares who fires the first shot, not who fires back. Kerry needs to go into attack dog mode with his soundbytes. Granted he is improving in this area.

But the other part of it is simply technical. The Kerry Campaign stupidly releases all their statements through US Newswire service, which is NOT used extensively by the major networks! So all those Kerry press releases are going absolutely nowhere, because the networks won't pick them up.

Kerry camp need to release statements through another service besides US Newswire.

reading the news yesterday says hey honey can buy myself an assault weapon. oh yea. just what i want. go huntin deer pheasant can use an assault weapon

being sarcastic. he says i dont have a single problem with this law. would rather protect the cops than people being able to buy an assault weapon. so there are reasonable repugs that dont want this law to lapse
