Marvin Kalb Defends Dan Rather and CBS
Marvin Kalb was interviewed on MSNBC about a half hour ago. Marvin is with the Kennedy School at Harvard BUT as you oldies know he was a big newsman and contemporary of Rathers back in our time. He not only said that an outfit like CBS and a newsman of the caliber of Rather do not run with a story like this because of it's bombshell effect in a presidential year without going through a very thorough vetting process. BUT, the great part is he made the anchor listen several times to the fact that the documents are not important here but rather the growing evidence of how Bush blew off his service, who pulled strings, why missed physical, etc. He said that in the end it wouldn't matter if any documentation was off a degree because the whole essence of the charges are still there and that the WH still refuses to explain what happend to him during that time frame. Kalb made sure that he drove this point home once at the start of the interview and once at the end.

When I was a child my parents loved the "Kalb Brothers". They thought they were smart and had integrity. I'm relieved that he repointed that stupid compass---it's not about the documents--it's about GWB's failure to respond to duty and to an order.

No interrupting or "but he had an honorable discharge" or any of that. It was sort of like God was talking.

7. Listen up because he is one of the uncorrupted journalists...not always
perfect, but nearly. Thank you Marvin Kalb. Many young people are growing up without knowing how news reporters used to work (a good part of the time).

8. I'm very surprised--isn't/wasn't Kalb a Republican? I guess it's
possible that he is and also has journalistic integrity. It's just the wingnuts and homecoming queens/kings on most news broadcasts these days make me forget that sometimes.

13. you're right, I was thinking of Bernard--but I just now searched
for info on Bernard and didn't find anything indicating he had died. So maybe he is retired (he would be 82 now).
