Dear President-Elect Obama,

Greetings from Alaska, and congratulations. We, like all Americans, wish you great success in overcoming the challenges you face as you take office. Certainly one of your most pressing concerns must be stabilizing our nation's economy. The unravelling of the financial markets, a sharp rise in unemployment, and a nationwide mortgage crisis all make for a daunting challenge for you, and for us as a country.

Alaska's vast natural resources can help bring our economy back to life. And nothing will do the trick faster than the construction of a natural gas pipeline from the North Slope of Alaska to the Lower 48.

We know that you supported the gas pipeline during your time in the United States Senate, and during your campaign for president. Indeed, this is what your campaign Web site still says about this important project:

"As president, Obama will work with stakeholders to facilitate construction of the pipeline. Not only is this pipeline critical to our energy security, it will create thousands of new jobs."

We couldn't agree with you more. We in Alaska have been working diligently to get this project ready for construction. We have created a competitive environment for building the pipeline that has resulted in serious planning and permitting efforts by two separate entities. One is an independent pipeline company that is working within a framework established by the state; the other is a joint venture between Conoco Phillips and BP Alaska. More.....

3. I'm ready to work with Alaska as long as they want to shove the pipeline
up Sarah Palin's ass. Especially after this line:

"To support this project, we have identified nearly $2 billion of infrastructure improvements needed before construction of the pipeline can even begin."

oink! oink!

4. They might need roads and power along the pipeline's path.
Maybe it's pork, or maybe 2 billion in infrastructure will save 20 billion on construction.

5. Whoever builds the pipeline is estimated to fork out $20 billion..
.
.

As far as jobs here's some info:

"The pipeline will employ approximately 9,300 people and require 54 million man hours to complete. If past history is any indication then there will be plenty of jobs for non-Alaskans and Canadians as well.

The workers will often be in very remote regions of Alaska, meaning that employers will pay for transportation, lodging, and food. In addition to highly competitive hourly wages and salaries there will be lots of overtime and hazard pay for many. The Alaska gas pipeline will create tremendous job opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers, from engineers to welders and heavy equipment operators."

Also-

"Keep in mind that this project will eventually deliver a volume of clean burning natural gas sufficient to warm thousands upon thousands of American homes. Permit us a bit of Alaskan pride when we say that natural gas is better than coal, better than ethanol, and far better than oil imported from the Middle East. There is a 30 to 50 year supply of gas in northern Alaska, and the long term benefits from that stable, reliable supply of energy are a bright spot for our state and for the nation."

I suppose we'll have to weigh the benefits when the time comes? ~~

If it's anything like the last pipeline, those willing to work in remote Alaska will reap the BIG BUCKS!

When I first became a member at DU, I kept wondering how everyone was putting all those cool smilies on here.. Someone here sent me a PM with the SUPER EASY instructions, along with a website that had a ton of smilies to use --> http://www.cosgan.de/smilie.php

Aside from that website, there's a zillion other ones out there.. plus, like I said, DU'ers swipe each others smilies when we see one that we like!!

7. I'm so f-ing tired of every project
that destroys the environment, or my neighborhood, being justified with the promise that it will create jobs. You could create a lot of jobs building a machine to destroy the world but that doesn't make it a good idea. There are lots of ways to create jobs.

Natural gas is an expensive, unclean fossil fuel and we have enough in the lower 48.
