Its a shame Dems in MO and WV are crossing over
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 09:06 AM by Skinner
Read this article. More info on how stupid some people are.

WASHINGTON - In front of the dollar store in downtown Dunbar, W.Va., Shirley Irwin scowls when she says she's going to vote for George W. Bush again.

Irwin, a 64-year-old lifelong Democrat, says things have been "terrible" during the nearly four years that Bush has been in the White House. She's scared that he's "ruined" Medicare and would do the same to Social Security, the programs she depends on to get by.

Irwin believes Bush planned to invade Iraq from the moment he took office and says he bungled the war there.

But she can't bear to vote for Sen. John Kerry, whom she calls a dishonest waffler whose ideas are no better than Bush's.

1. this is
fairly normal for a challenger at this time. Give the race two weeks to settle in and give Kerry the chance to a one on one debate the race will settle in as a dead heat race.

10. Even the reporter said this could be a post-RNC bounce
Also, it says most of these people voted for Bush in 2000, so it doesn't sound like these were Gore voters. The good news is many don't like Bush, so if Kerry even makes some inroads in favorability, he could sway some of them. The debates could help a lot.

However, it is sad voters would even consider voting for a guy they think has done a poor job.

12. My parents live in WVA. She is fuming because everyone
for miles around (and hey, they all know each other up there) is pro-Bush, yet claims to be Christian. I can hear her blood pressure going up over the phone when she talks about it....and she is 77 so that's not good. Kinda makes you want to believe some of those WVA jokes, ya know?

4. They aren't entirely stupid
They could still be won over. But it seems unlikely.

Some of their points make sense, considering the poor job the media has done over the past 4 years.

if they watch them. They clearly have never seen Kerry speak.

13. Maybe the bad news for Bush is
all Kerry has to do is look mildly presidential and he'll win some of these people over. They certainly seem to not like Bush very much.

23. I agree. Kerry has been discredited in some eyes by SBVT
and in others he is simply not hitting a chord. He needs to show them all he is more consistent and dependable than he is getting credit for.

15. It's depressing here in Missouri
All I see are Bush commercials. It has been weeks since the major media here have aired a Kerry commericial. It's like he has written Missouri off.

I don't speak for anyone but myself but I think Kerry could win over quite a few undecideds if he would emphasize his health care and education proposals here. I think they would play well. Most people I know care about good schools for their kids, help to pay for college, and affordable health care. Yeah, some people are scared shitless about another Al-Quaida attack, but I would bet that bread and butter issues would swing enough over the the democratic column to make this state competitive again.

22. The article mentioned that some voters
want to see Kerry talk more about those things. As for commercials, the DNC will be running ads in Missouri, and the Kerry campaign might in October.

Edited on Mon Sep-13-04 06:01 PM by coalition_unwilling
From what I remember, it's a yahoo state, except for small pockets in Kansas City and St. Louis. Remember also that during the Civil War Missouri was a slave state; think 'Southern' and you've got MO in a nutshell.

16. I don't know if the other compadres from Kalifornia have been............
posting anything about this, but I think the bell was struck just in the last couple weeks. When corporate interests were interested in installing the Groper in Kalifornia, it was wall to wall Arnie 24/7 for last month or two. It was blatant to the point of being nauseating.

This is one trend that Kalifornia in reality had no hand in instigating :argh:

painting their opposition negatively than Dems do. This is evidenced here. Throw out the waffling, flip flop charges enough and it sticks in people's minds. It takes on life. Has Kerry flip flopped before? Sure. Has Bush? Absolutely. It really should be a wash in that department but the Repubs have painted Bush as decisive and resolute while they portray Kerry as wishy washy. It's been hammered home so hard that people buy it without looking into things or using discretion.

20.  I think it's temporary..
I'm in smalltown Missouri and I just had a very interesting weekend. It started out early saturday morning at a dem fundraiser breakfast, and the turnout was very impressive. There were hundreds of people there, and this was 8:00 AM on a saturday morning in a fairly small town. Next I went to a little fair at a different town. The repubs had a table set up where they were raffling off (I kid you not) some sort of fancy rifle. The dems didn't have a table, because they had given up. Both the dems and the repubs had floats entered in the parade for their candidates to ride on. When the repub float went by the crowd cheered and clapped, but when the dems went by I really do believe that the only person cheering and clapping was me. I talked to the dems that were riding the float, and they said they wished I had been there thursday, cause that night they had to ride through in total silence. (The people here would never boo..so I guess that counts for something).

Sunday I was back in my town again with a bunch of signs and bumperstickers I was determined to distribute. I talked to tons of people, but all but a few said they couldn't support Kerry. I spoke to a guy who I know has always been a big democratic supporter, and even he apologized but said Kerry scared him. One very religious woman told me she looks at Kerry and just sees evil. I was absolutely baffled and bewildered, but than I got to thinking that this is a totally different reaction than what I was getting form some of these very same people a week ago. If things turned against Kerry this quickly, surely we can turn them back around quickly too...and the large turnouts at the dem gatherings tell me there is still a group of core supporters here.
