5. If Obama does not "speak out" in some way and this carnage goes on, the Arab world will not listen.
He will have burned up all the good will that his diverse ancestry has gained him.

Obama MUST speak out! There's no excuse to hold back ... other than political expediency.

9. Doesn't matter. If Obama remains silent while the Israelis turn Gaza into a parking lot,
Obama will NOT be received warmly in ANY Arab Nation. None. Nada. ZILCH.

Obama has a "precious opportunity" to speak from the heart when President IF he doesn't turn a "blind eye" to this present massacre.

It's not fair at all, but it will be a fact: If Obama remains silent and the carnage continues, he will have squandered this opportunity.

13. We'll never know, though, what sort of deals Obama and * struck...
...in their many meetings. In return for *'s not fucking up anything else in the last few weeks (and he really could), Obama may have agreed to Help preserve the fiction that * is in any way presidential.

Personally, I'd like to see Obama take a stand, and don't find this near-silence encouraging.

7. Madeline Albright
on Bill Press this morning saying "Hamas has been exerting a lot of undue...well basically, military actions against Israel." "They have this fancy roadmap, but never took it out of the glove compartment."

Defends Obama in not speaking out on Israeli/Palestinian crisis - he has no power yet. Transition is a "very difficult time."

due, largely in part from Bill Clinton's continuation of Bush 41's sanctions on Iraq, i.e., her tenure as his SOS. Something to the effect that "the deaths were worth it." :puke:

Oh, and also the fact that "Condi Rice" was Albright's dad's FAVORITE student. :wow:

12. It aptly conveyed the information that "hits home" within an editorial cartoon format.
In addition, the fact that they've sent Madeline Albright out to SERVE as Obama's apologist for his deafening silence - makes me want to blow chow. :puke:

16. LOL. That is funny. But seriously Israel is taking advantage of the
power vacuum a transition makes. Its happened many times before, hell some of the states seceded from the union when Buchanan was a lame duck before Lincoln. It happens all the time but some are expecting Obama to solve every problem overnight. As far as the mid east goes in general, Biden is going to Pakistan in a few days and that is a good sign as it will be a source of problems for the next few years.

is completely Ironic that their was huge resistance to Obama even being elected. now that he has been. he is respecting the constitution. It would seem everyone is so used to abusing or ignoring the constitution. they are getting pissed off Obama is actually respecting the constitution.

21. This whole thing is so immature
The inauguration is Jan. 20 and always has been.

Obama is not required to solve these problems instantly, either.

What would his "speaking out" do but give the pundits and half of DU an excuse to criticize him for THAT?

in effect non-support for bush/israel.

by not publicly voicing support for these attacks, obama is "voicing" his opposition to them and bush's overall mideast policy.

35. Well, you heard a slobbering moron on a water-carrying expedition
His silence means whatever people want it to mean. It's the blankest of slates from someone who prides himself on being a blank slate upon whom people can project their dreams.

I think he's probably doing the right thing to not muddy the waters and present a raggedy front to the hostile parts of the world, but this doesn't "prove" dick.

For seemingly the first time in his life, he's going to be held to account on EVERYTHING and for a very long time. I hope he proves me dead wrong and rises to the occasion like a real leader, even if it's taking stances with which I disagree. He is going to get a great deal of flak when he gets forced to commit, and each decision will leave some people feeling misled.

23. I wonder something about apologists for Obama's sudden muteness
...have any of them referred to Bush as the "pResident?" Have any claimed in the last 8 years
that Al Gore is their President? Or that OH and NM were stolen from Kerry? Have any of them
challenged the fundamental legitimacy of the Bush Administration? Have any of them typed "Bush*?"

I bet the answer would be YES. Yet, suddenly we're supposed to stand on ceremony while people die.
Suddenly Bush isn't the "pResident," but instead is the duly elected President of the United States
until the last possible second. All so the muteness of the Obama team can be rationalized.

To which I say BULLSHIT.

Gazans will die in the next 13 days who are waiting, hungry, in cold, dark buildings, for some
sort of hope. Failing action, at least they will have the solace of an amportant man's stated convictions.
But first we have to have a party.

26. Good Grief.
What is he supposed to say? What is he supposed to do? He has no power, no policy making authority, and no way to implement anything until noon on the 20th. We have one President at a time (even if the current occupant can in no means claim the title) for a reason, otherwise we would have anarchy and stupidity. But we have waited with baited breath for so long to take back the White House, that we are already setting PE Obama up for a fall, as he will not be able to fix everything we want him to fix immediately, nor will he be able to satisfy all the demands put upon him, as some of them will be contradictory, and at odds with each other.

31. As he is not yet president,
Obama does not have access available from the CIA and military regarding this conflict. Nor does he have any control on anything whatsoever in the Office of the President until January 20th. It is impossible for him to make the informed decision that the situation demands.

Should he really go blindly here? The situation is more than complex and both sides like to take big liberties with the truth of what is actually going on. No one needs someone as important and potentially influential as Obama shooting his mouth off until he has all the information he needs.
