Obama adds 'Neighborhood Ball' to parties

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/01/obama-neighborhood-ball-inauguration.html

President-elect Barack Obama said this morning he is adding a Neighborhood Ball to the list of inaugural parties planned just more than two weeks from now.

Obama said in a statement today he doesn't want those who live in the District of Columbia or elsewhere to feel left out of the celebration surrounding his elevation to the presidency Jan. 20.

He said he wanted to make sure "we had an event that would be open to our new neighborhood here in Washington, D.C., and also neighborhoods across the country." The Neighborhood Ball will be at the Washington Convention Center.

Officials said tickets for the event will be free or an "affordable price" and that a portion of the tickets will be set aside for District of Columbia residents.

3. Why not give them tickets to the glitzy balls? -or dump these glitzy balls where the
super rich, lobbyists and influentials and the governing class shmooze. Are neighborhood balls separate but equal---I think it seems more like a separate party for the so-called "little people."

4. I think it's cool that he added a ball for the "little people"
It's more than other presidents have done.

Why does it feel like there are some people who just want to attack Obama for everything these days? Here he does something unprecedented to be inclusive and he gets accused of "separate but equal".

13. I'm with you. Enough of the nitpicking ... A neighborhood ball is a
fabulous idea, and will be attended by thousands.

7. The 'neighborhood ball' is the designated ball for the 10 supporters picked by campaign
From an email sent out today by Michelle Obama...

Last week, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced that we're bringing 10 supporters to Washington, DC for several days of Inaugural celebrations.

With the deadline coming up on Thursday, I'm pleased to announce the selection of the first grassroots supporter who will be attending the Inauguration.

Cynthia Russell from Newberry, Florida, and her guest will attend the welcome ceremony, Barack's swearing-in, the Inaugural Parade, and our Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.

Cynthia is a builder and has been feeling the impact of the recent economic crunch. She wrote:

"I'm a single woman who has been building homes for over 18 years. I've supported myself and have been able to help out my mother from time to time. Now I find myself wondering how much longer I can hold on and be able to pay my bills and keep the doors open for business. Barack gives me hope. Hope that 2009 will truly bring change to Americans who find themselves in this mess with me."

We need to select 9 more supporters like Cynthia, and I would love for you to be one of them.

(The email then asks for a donation of a particular amount.)
