Report: Figure in probe that led to Richardson's withdrawal gave money to Obama's campaign
Just reporting it, and not that it means anything... but FYI...

Barack Obama's presidential campaign "took big money from a man at the center of a federal probe that has forced one of Obama's top Cabinet picks to withdraw," ABC News' The Blotter reports.

The blog adds that:

Financial records show the Obama campaign got more than $30,000 from California financier David Rubin, the target of an investigation into donations and possible "pay-to-play" deals involving New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Obama's pick for commerce secretary.

Richardson removed himself from consideration for the post Sunday, saying the ongoing grand jury investigation threatened to hold up his confirmation. Richardson and Rubin have both denied any wrongdoing in the matter, which involved contributions and state business in 2003 and 2004. ...

Reached by phone Monday, Rubin declined to answer questions. His firm's spokesman, Allan Ripp, said neither he nor Rubin would discuss Rubin's donations to Obama or his attendance at the fundraiser. Ripp said that Rubin sought nothing for his donation but to elect Obama.

Neither the Obama campaign nor the DNC responded immediately to a request for comment.

1. And? What is the conclusion about this?
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 02:02 PM by FrenchieCat
that this Rubin fellow's money was tainted and everyone should have known at the time?

I don't understand why this is even a story.....or why it is even posted.

I think that if it is ever found out that this Rubin guy is guilty of something, than the money should be returned. Beyond that, I can see now that the Obama Administration will have to be as pure as driven snow and that means in any and all associations, 3 degrees of separation, or else.

Guess this is the media payback for allowing Bush to get away with everything and anything. Now, Obama gets the extreme reverse treatment of that. I'm not much worried, because Obama is definitely the most honest President we've had since Carter.....but still, it is quite annoying that Obama is forced to live up to a standard that would rival the life led by Mother Theresa. I think that envelope is being pushed a bit much.

7. Apparently, anyone who donated to Barack Obama had better be a saint, otherwise the money is tainted

:eyes:

This is how it's going to be for the next 4 (hopefully 8) years. Obama knows someone who knows someone who is under investigation and that person just happened to donate to Obama's campaign, which is his legal right, and somehow, that makes Obama "shady"

Is the man supposed to do a background check on every single individual who donates to his campaign?

2. $30,000? I'm confused ... isn't there supposed to be a $2000 limit?
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 02:08 PM by BattyDem
I thought an individual could not give more than $2000 to a candidate, yet this guy gave $30,000 and I've heard other stories about large donors in various campaigns.

I've never understood this. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks. :-)

5. I love your meek disclaimers at the top of every thread
"I don't have a dog in this hunt," "just reportin' the news." As if we don't know you like nothing better than to stir the shit.

8. I love your paranoid response about "weak disclaimers."
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 02:11 PM by wyldwolf
Perhaps you can tell us what a strong enough disclaimer would be?

And while you're at it, go fuck yourself and your insinuations.

12. Allow me to correct your grotesquery:
Wyldwolf is now, and has been as long as I've noticed, a pretty damned staunch Obama supporter. We've tussled quite a few times over the months, so I know this first-hand.

If this poster's support isn't of the monomaniacal, blinkered fantasy type, that shouldn't be seen as some kind of defect; we've got enough binary idiocy on this board. This person is still an acceptable member of the fold, so if it's purge time at the old commissariat, I'd suggest pounding on some other door.

There are plenty of killjoys and non-fans on this board, but you're barking up the wrong tree on this one.

11. Only $2,300 dollars to Obama's campaign
From the link in the article:

Rubin's money went to a joint Obama-DNC fund ($28,500), the DNC itself ($26,200), and to the Obama campaign ($2,300), according to the database of campaign donations at OpenSecrets.Org. News of the federal investigation into Rubin's New Mexico dealings had broken less than three weeks earlier.
