All of these ads on CNN for commemorative plates drive me nuts. "Own a piece of the movement" my ass. You own a piece of a movement by doing work. Not owning some fancy dinnerware.

2. Nope. We've got a popular President now.....
.... it's a beautiful thing. Revel in it.

(Although YOU are correct that you own a movement by working for it, that I agree with.)

29. Nah. It's like buying swag for your fav. sports team....
.... just a way for someone to show off their team pride so to speak. Buying it for some hoped future value, perhaps not the BEST idea, but if you work hard for your money and it brings you joy to eat off of Obamas face, or watch him smiling down from you as the plate rests on a special table, then that's fine.

There are people in this nation who are suddenly feeling new pride in their country in a way they may have never before. This provides a vehicle for that excitement.

Bring on the swag. ;)

8. They are boring, crappy plates, too.
I collect plates, and cannot find one I'd buy. The cups and coins are boring, too. I was looking at a Barack-in-the-Box just a few minutes ago. At least it's cute, and functional.

It is rather annoying, but it looks like I'm part of the problem. I already have his inauguration invitation hanging in a frame on my wall.

16. Better than a president whose face appears in protest marches.....
Perhaps we should be grateful for this small problem,
rather than annoyed...cause I've been more than just a bit annoyed
and irritated, I've been damned angry for the last 8 years.

A little over the top marketing is currently
the last thing that will drive me nuts.

24. Amen....
evidently people want the stuff because it's definitely selling.

Also, I love the fact that my boys think enough of the President to actually want to wear tee shirts and hats and anything else they can find with his picture on it. Doesn't bother me in the least. It gives some of us a great sense of pride.

And yea in general I don't like the merchandising. However, it's probably a good thing politically.

32. There Will Be More
Obama became a cultural icon before taking the White House.

Over the summer, I saw a Golden Globe-nominated director with an Obama purse. How's that for inspiration?

Check out this prophetic post of mine from 2003 -

I don't see a cultural icon being a one term president.

23. To each her own
I wouldn't spend my money on such stuff, not my style. I agree, the blatant sales-pitch is obnoxious.

On the other hand, I have an indelible memory of a picture of JFK my folks bought and hung on the wall after he was elected. I remember loving that picture. It made me feel good, and I don't know why, seeing as I was grade-schooler.

I don't know how my parents were sold that picture, certainly not off of TV.

My feelings all boiled down: if buying an Obama plate, or whatever, gives someone hope or pleasure, who am I to tell them otherwise?

He said he was glad to help the economy and he admired the entrepreneuring spirit of the people.

35. I remember
shortly after 9/11 the GOP was using some photo of Bush looking out of the window of Air Force 1 as a fundraiser. It was shameful amd offensive.

But people love clutter and crap. I'm trying to purge my environment of useless doodads not acquire more, though I am saving my commemorative invitation and my YES WE DID bumpersticker.

36. It doesn't bother one bit. I worked my butt off to help him
get there, so I am happy that everyone is on OUR side now. I have fallen for the buying everything Obama. I am doing this for kids, especially for my six year old who knows exactly who he is and when he won. The day after the election I went to my son's bed, he was sleeping, i woke him up saying " good morning sweetie, today is NOvember 5, 2008, Do you know who our president elect is?, My six year old son replied, "yes mom, our new president is Barack Obama".

I gave him a kiss, he gave me a hug, we celebrated.
