Poll question: "Move forward" or prosecute the criminals leaving office?
I don't see those as mutually exclusive, but from what I've read recently, Obama does.

I want the sense of DU on this.

Do we push, for whatever effect it will have, Obama to at the very least appoint an independent prosecutor to seek justice for the crimes of the last administration, or do we forget those transgressions, mass murder among the most severe, circumventing the constitution, I guess, the least?

Does "moving forward" preclude administering justice for crimes past?

One or the other?

Tell me.

1. Why bother having laws if we won't use them?
I am ashamed of my nation because we chose to ignore what was done in the Middle East in our name.

For the sake of the thousands who died throughout the Middle East....
For the sake of the millions in the Middle East who are now refugees from their country....
For the sake of the babies born in the Middle East ravaged by depleted uranium oxide poisoning....

....all due to bush's fiasco war against terror,

bush and his crime family must be held accountable.

2. Amen, brother.
Or sister.

And what you list is just the beginning.

Those thieves, those constitution-ripping bastards. The slaughter they reined upon the innocent people of Iraq is just the tip of the iceburg. They are guilty on so many counts. They have lied to us so many times, betrayed our trust, manipulated us with unfound fear. 9 fucking 11 a failure and a tool. Civil freedoms torn asunder. Oh my God. I don't even know where to go next with this...

3. All the war mongers and profiteers and war criminals...
should be dealt with "old school" style.

Their rotting heads on pikes lining Pennsylvania Avenue.

Might deter future generations of neocons and plain ole cons... and maybe a few RepukeliCONS.

Of course, I kid... I kid! :)

4. Justice is job one.
They've already stolen about all they can steal so forget the "economy" and phony bailouts and give the world the justice it deserves. To do any less is complicity in crimes against humanity, gigantic ones.

5. They have robbed the people's treasury blind while chopping away at our very consitution.
Holy fuck. Does it get any more blatant?

7. If Obama made prosecution of the Bush administration and all those
associated with it, and all those who have profited from the crimes they have colluded in, the centerpiece of his presidency, I think he would have a hugely successful two terms. And once he got the vultures out of our livers the economy would improve dramatically without intervention and he could save himself the trouble of the figleaf fixes.

14. Obama doesn't even have to be involved in prosecuting
That's not his job. It's the job of Congress and the Judiciary. He doesn't have to get involved at all.

6. I'd love to see it happen, but I don;t think any of the scumbags will ever be
brought to justice.

Look for more bid'ness as usual.

8. If the US just goes on, business as usual and
does not hold these people accountable to the rule of law, everything we accomplish is tainted from this moment on. Everything.

10. You can't move forward, until you clean up the garbage
left behind. I'm all for moving forward, but I want these criminals in jail where they belong.

11. Holding Bush accountable will require cooperation from the Media, Reid, Pelosi
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 09:02 AM by Truth Hurts A Lot
at the very least. They have done nothing so far to hold Bush accountable but it may have been due to intimidation while Bush was in office and wanting to at least get a Democratic president first. We'll see. Obama CANNOT do it alone. It will require many departments coming together.

The Media may be the most important component because the public MUST be informed about what's going on. If the Media had been doing its job to begin with, there would be no question as to whether Bush&Co. need to be prosecuted!

12. Hopeful that the AG and the OLC will press on
The door seems to still be open for Legal core of the Administration to prosecute crimes, should evidence be found. (That really shouldn't be hard.)

I'm fine with Obama's comment about not prosecuting Intelligence officers, don't want them looking over their shoulders, etc... From my perspective, while what they were doing was obviously illegal, we should be prosecuting the ones that gave the orders, not the ones that followed the orders. Prosecute Cheney, Rumsfeld, or Bush with his recent admission of personally approving torture.

Or, as Maddow has suggested, maybe one of these bozos will travel to Europe and get arrested there for War Crimes.

13. We don't need another Independent Prosecutor
The new admin already has the tools it needs to fully investigate the crimes of the Bush admin.

What is this fascination with appointing an independent prosecutor?

15. I can't help but recall....
all the bitching that was done, because Clinton allowed the first * cabal to get away with everything they did...in "an effort to move on".....we want the same thing again??? Perhaps that's exactly what the * cabal 2 is counting on....no way, no how...time for a few surprises...and not only that...what keeps the pe on his toes and doing things legal during h is tenure...IF there is NEVER going to be any comeuppance for wrong doing???? WHAT THIS BUNCH DID...they did in OUR NAME...let's NOT forget that, shall we...and better yet...let's not FORGIVE IT...when either * travels abroad, they go with a security detail to protect them...how about when you or I travel...???yet * IS responsible for the hatred felt towards every one of us...and he and his policies are the ones who put our personal safety at risk...wb

16. The Bush Crime Family have been sucking this country dry and committing treason since the 1930's.
How much longer will they be allowed to get away with it?
