DC Residents....help please re: Inauguration Day

Any help/advice you can give would be sooo appreciated. We are coming up on Amtrak Tuesday morning and plan to go straight down to the National Mall from there. Problem is...our hotel is near Mass. Ave. and 16th Street so we have to cross over (or go around) the parade route after the swearing in to get to our hotel. I understand that backpacks are allowed on the mall but not on the parade route. We will have backpacks. Anyone know if or where we would be able to crossover the parade route with backpacks or would we have to walk around?

1. Haven't checked it out,

but I suspect that planning any maneuvers is uncertain, due to crowds. Walk 'around,' pass 16th St. (White House, parade destination, is 16th and Pennsylvania) on the Mall/Constitution Av., beyond 17th; walk up whatever street you're on to meet up with Mass. Av. Have fun!

Just get on the north side of the street. That is the uphill side.
