34. Not at all. Bluebear is extending the same "logic".
A lot of people died on 9/11 but we came together as a country.

Thousands of people are homeless because of Katrina but downtown is so much nicer now.

Eight years of Bush are worth it because that elected Obama.

Obama elevates Dominionists but they don't get the last word.

Cool.

But Rev. Lowery, like Coretta Scott King was, is very supportive of gay rights, and sees them as an extension of the same battle for civil rights in which he played such an important part.

13. My post from December 20:
The Sound of a Door Closing

That's what we'll hear when Warren speaks on January 20th. Nothing could be a more fitting ending to the most shameful national episode in living memory. How appropriate that Bush's exit will be marked by comments from a voice of self-aggrandizing bigotry, deliberate ignorance, exclusion and self-anointed religious "authority."

In strokes of exquisite contrast the ceremony will begin with the long overdue departure of an evil regime; but it will conclude with a benediction delivered by Rev. Lowery, a soul long dedicated to benefiting the lives of others. The hand of grace thus extended over the nation as Obama's door opens will be worthy of the "amen" that welcomes the restorative energy of hope.

It matters little who gives a prayer or an invocation. What will be remembered most, besides the signing in (which you're right is actually #1) is what Obama says. That is what will be written into the history books.

33. Anyone pushing religion into this event is NOT someone I care to..
think is important in my life, even if they are gay.

This is a governmental event, not a religious event. Let's let those that have some sort of religion in their lives just deal with it.

The rest of us can rise above these ceremonial moments, and deal with the realities of our world, hoping the homophobic people find some way to accept Obama as one they can feel comfortable with someday.

35. Roland Martin is wrong (as he so often is). The invocation calls God
to be present at the event. For non-believers, this may not seem like much, but in the faith community, the invocation is WAAAY more important than the benediction. The benediction is a blessing of the people, the invocation invokes the Creator. The invocation is more important. At a good many events, the benediction is treated as an afterthought. Nice of Martin to try to save Obama's bacon in this way, but he's wrong. And I suspect he knows it.

69. I didn't know this about him. What an idiot. Here's a "lovely" quote.....
"My wife, an ordained Baptist minister for 20 years, has counseled many men and women to walk away from the gay lifestyle, and to live a chaste life. She has asked heterosexual men and women to abstain from sex until marriage. For her, the obligation is to her calling as a minister of the Word, rather than bowing to societal pressures. She loves gay and lesbian church members dearly, and prays with them, talks to them, and breaks bread with them. But what she cannot do is compromise the integrity of the teachings of Christ."

I hate this bullshit. I wish these people would just STFU!
