Obama prayer leader from group US linked to Hamas

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Muslim scholar chosen to speak at President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural prayer service Wednesday is the leader of a group that federal prosecutors say has ties to terrorists.

Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America since 2006, is one of many religious leaders scheduled to speak at the prayer service at Washington's National Cathedral.

Mattson has been the guest of honor at State Department dinners and has met with senior Pentagon officials during the Bush administration. She also spoke at a prayer service at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

But in 2007 and as recently as last July, federal prosecutors in Dallas filed court documents linking the Hartford, Conn.-based Islamic society to the group Hamas, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization.

Given the sensitivity of that on the campaign trail, I am glad to see that now that he has been elected he is not afraid to include a Muslim leader in his inauguration. I think it makes a statement about the Islamophobia that we saw during the campaign and I am proud of him for taking that risk to make that statement. It would be better if whoever he picked had no connection to Hamas, but these seem like pretty tenuous ties, and the article says that the FBI has used this group to make inroads in the Muslim community. This article seems like grasping at straws. Good on Obama for including a Muslim leader, and especially a female one.

Anyone that dares to suggest that Palestinians are human beings and that they have legitimate grievances, is immediately labeled a terrorist. Hopefully we will see less of this crap once Obama becomes President.

Nelson Madela and the African National Congress were also considered terrorist and terrorist organizations respectively by successive US administrations.
