"Prostitution Free Zone" During Inauguration
WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- District police have placed signs along 5th and I Streets. They read, "Warning, Prostitution Free Zone." Those who disobey could be fined 300 dollars, and even jailed. But will the city's plan work?

DC City Councilman Jim Graham said officers cannot enforce loitering laws, which is the reason for these signs.

"Because this is focused, its limited in time, its aimed at a very specific issue, if you don't move along, well put you in the car," he said.

John Thompson lives in the neighborhood, and he said prostitution is a major problem. He hopes the signs make a difference, but what will visitors think?

"I'm not concerned with what visitors think. I'm concerned about the problem that exists," Thompson said.
"If I saw a sign that said, 'Prostitution Free Zone' I would feel a little uncomfortable that there would be a house next store where police are at," she said.

Tamira also believes some visitors will come to the inauguration for legitimate business, but prostitute on the side to make extra money.

at the district police. They ask, "When is change coming?"

6. Funny. I've seen hookers waving down upscale cars and limos within blocks of the White House.
To be clear, these women were wearing long coats, which hung open and displayed mini-skirts and halter tops underneath.

Not surprised by the signs.

9. The idea that Washington D.C. could be or have within it a "Prostitution Free Zone"
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 01:13 PM by kenny blankenship
defies all our cherished notions and traditions concerning the Federal District, where our leaders meet and our taxes go. "Washington D.C. - Prostitution Free Zone" is not merely a dangerous innovation, it is a contradiction in terms.

Needless to say I am against it.

13. I think it's an appropriate use of taxpayer money.
D.C. law enforcement is stretched past the max this week(ish). They'll probably have a skeleton crew of officers working vice while counting on the signs to serve as a psychological deterrent. They just want it off the streets/out of sight for the next few days. That's all they ever really want.

How are they going to enforce it? The prostitutes can work every bar and be booked solidly for days. And good luck to them. They're hard working people
