Saw two things this morning.

First was a piece on one of the networks about how popular Obama is around the world. It dovetailed with his high approval ratings here.

The second was a Friedman commentary in today's NYT. I know we can rip on old Tom for so much of what he spouts, but today he is right. I liked the idea of telling the bankers that they must fix themselves and those that can't will be nationalized. I would love to have the Depends concession at that meeting. I particularly liked what he says at the end.



Obama's popularity and his good will with the people of our country and around the world, make me think that he needs to stop playing with the people who gave us these problems. They will never come along with him, and he has the power right now to stride confidently and start making changes. Let him use that power to castigate those who stand in the way. If the Democrats in Congress balk - call out their names. Take them to the woodshed in public. Shame the republicans who try to stop this man the country sees as a hero from helping the country. He only has a short time to use this power. Remember that bush had a 90% approval back in October 01. Use it or lose it.

I like it that he seems to be a nice man, but right now we need a forceful and dynamic and confident leader. We won't get consensus, and the compromises we will make to approach it will kill any chance of recovery.

Damn it man. You are the man. You got elected. In years past it might have been prudent to ease into the job, to form up coalitions with the nasties. That may be your forte, but we need something else now. Step up to the podium and tell people what to do. I bet you will be surprised. I'm looking forward to your inaugural address, but even more to your leading us out of the neocon-generated morass.
