HBO is homophobic..yeah, right...come on....the claim is BULLSHIT
I have yet seen any one mad about Bishop Robinson's invocation not being shown prove it was done simply because he is gay.

Not that I am a defender of corporate America, accusing HBO as being homophobic is not only ridiculous, but shows the silliness of certain conspiracy theories.

For those that keep harping at HBO, take a hard look at their programing. Remember what network characterized Randy Shilts' And the Band Played On? Or how about Angels in America? Or how about Six Feet Under? Or The Wire? Or how about Real Sex?


My point is, it is easy to claim a grand conspiracy, but when you do, you better have your facts. I am so sick and tired of people here at DU doing the same things that so many of us condemn.

HBO has done wonderful documentaries on many, many progressive subjects.

So those who think HBO is homophobic, do your research! It has been more friendly to gays than any other network.

4. There have been several threads arguing otherwise..
and here's the thing, more than anything, it was probably a thing more related to logistics or programming instead of some sort of homophobia. And the past of HBO shows exactly how open their programming has been.

Saying gays are persecuted here at DU is like Christians claiming they're persecuted. DU is ruled by gays, the rules are always changing in favor of gays. You have to believe in gay marriage or you can't post to DU, and you can't even make fun of Ann Coulter's appearance because the admins have decided it could offend transsexuals.

And why is it always "gay", but not "lesbian"? We lesbians are kind of involved in this, too. Or are men more important than women, even among the GLBT community??

The OP's point wasn't to "bash" gays, just pointing out that HBO has allowed very progressive views in its programming, so it's unfair to call HBO "homophobic".

There was no attack on gays whatsoever, so lay off the paranoia, please.

Gay AND lesbian. Either word works for me. When it really matters , I make darn sure they know I'm a gay woman. Most can tell by looking. Online...I'm less concerned.
I never even thought to worry about whether the G or the L came first. If its alfabetical, the B would lead. (BGLT) like that..... but I dont think the transexuals will like it any better. Lets try this : (TLGB). Nope. Looks the same as a kind of crappy francise where you drink beer and eat finger foodwith your co-workers on Friday nights.

The OP's point was largely based on a sarcastic piece of flame-bait (subject line= something like "HBO is homophobic")written by someone who was belittling the concerns of some of DU's LGBT* community.

* (just for you, dear)

I dont think anyone in this whole thread is saying HBO isnt GREAT.

Atmosperics aside, that was an pretty decent show: the actual history was strained a bit, but the 'feel' was captured very well.

I am pinning the blame on the Obama political machine. This is not the first slap aimed at what they obviously see as an expendable block of voters, or worst voters who will always come back no matter how hard they are smacked.

Started by any GLBT DUers. I saw one started by a straight DUer, that confused HBO and Showtime. Both networks have shown alot of gay-positive programming, and I said that to my wife when she read me the OP title. AI have seen OPs mocking GLBT concerns. I think you may be confusing who is starting what.

my post you're referring to, the word I used was anti-religious. I happen to think the Invocation would have been excluded regardless of who gave it in order to fit the most celebrities into the 2-hr program. Someone's performance would have needed to be excluded or cut short in order to fit in the Invocation. So it could be anti-religious in the sense that the programmers felt an extra song would be more entertaining than a prayer, regardless of who was giving the prayer.

many threads accusing HBO of being homophobic and in this thread I'm being told I'm full of shit?

What am I missing? Seriously. HBO has been one of the most consistent supporters of great journalism and people are yelling about ONE invocation being missed, most likely for explainable reasons.

I feel there is a joke going on that I'm missing.

Sunday afternoon, HBO televised the Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial — a concert planned by the Presidential Inauguration Committee — to kick off the festivities surrounding Obama's inauguration on Tuesday.

Openly gay bishop Gene Robinson delivered the opening prayer before the start of the concert, but the prayer was not included as part of HBO's broadcast.

Contacted Sunday night by AfterElton.com concerning the exclusion of Robinson's prayer, HBO said via email, "The producer of the concert has said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee made the decision to keep the invocation as part of the pre-show."
