17. I will say this about Reagan, when he wasn't talking, he looked presidential.
A guy you'd want as president. He just looked very tough and competent.

I guess you can't always judge a book by its cover. :eyes:

32. Quid pro quo: a prize for a right answer. Hostages for Reagan in exchange for...?
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 10:20 PM by kenny blankenship
We'll probably never know for sure.

Maybe the Iranians released the hostages after Carter left office just to punish Carter. If so, their reputation as shrewd bargainers is undeserved. They rewarded forces within the U.S. led by Reagan, that would prove a thousand times more belligerent and vindictive than Carter could be on his worst day.

(Sorry I switched my reply through editing. I meant the original reply to appear as a response directly to the initial question)

58. Ha, I'm ancienter!
I was in fifth grade when JFK was inaugurated, and our teacher brought a TV into the classroom so we could watch. It was obviously bitterly cold in Washington that day.

Our teacher had been reading us Robert Frost poems in the week before the inauguration, so she must have known he was going to read a specially commissioned work. In any case, when a very frail-looking Robert Frost stepped up to the microphone, we all knew who he was.

I think I remember both JFK and Ike wearing top hats.

43. Actually ...

Officials in Carter's administration negotiated it, specifically Warren Christopher.

This was the origin of the popular use of the term "October Surprise," i.e. Reagan feared the "October Surprise" of the release of the hostages, which may have influenced the election, thus the book of the same name.

What Reagan (or Bush and his connections actually) is thought to have done is negotiate to *prevent* the release until after the election, preferably after Reagan's inauguration should he win. IOW, the Reagan camp essentially negotiated to keep them in captivity.

Voila ...

23. They diagnosed my mother with an inoperable brain tumor
and I couldn't help but be stricken by life's little ironies. Reagan took his oath and in doing so, the nation was held hostage by his conservative policies. At the same time the US hostages were freed, my mother began her lifelong captivity as a hostage to a disease that would control her and destroy her for the remainder of her time on earth.

I won't ever forget that day, where I was that "moment in time".

47. Thank you for your compassion
I was happy for the hostages but at that same time, in a matter of minutes with just a few words spoken, my world view shrunk drastically - the nation's politics, the turmoil through out the world were no longer as important as they had been. That happens when crisis becomes personal and no matter how hard you try, you can't make others feel your pain, know your pain, all you can ask for is compassion and understanding. Thank you for offering both to me today.

Just kidding. The hostages were released. I remember it well as I was at that inauguration. We were behind a mounted horse unit trying to avoid piles of horse shit while trying to keep in step.
