Rachel Maddow is making a GREAT POINT right now...
Since President Obama obviously knows that he won, as he told Republicans today (LOL) ~ WHY all the tax breaks in the stimulus package??

A third of the package is tax breaks, leaving a lot of infrastructure projects on the cutting room floor.

WTF??

20. Call me crazy...
but maybe the provisions in Obama's stimulus package are included because he actually thinks they the right thing from an economic policy perspective.

Oh, aside from his call for post-partisanship, didn't he talk a bit about tax cuts during the campaign?

Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 09:59 PM by depakid
despite being warned by many notable economists- and the economy continues to tank, 2010 is going to result in a big wake-up call for them.

A 1994 like situation is not beyond the realm of possibilities- nor is a one term presidency.

Don't remember the campaign when McCain claimed Obama would raise the public's taxes but Obama said he'd cut them for 95% of the people?

or are maybe not really Democrats at all.
These people need to get it through their heads that the Democrats have been in charge since November 2006 and are especially now. Quit playing nice, and start telling these Repugs to get stuffed and go sit in the corner.

For all those lost in the war, Iraqis and Americans, that man should be shamed every time he appears in public. He should be in jail, but if the Dems were to spineless to impeach, then booing him is the least we can do. Respect is earned and he didn't accomplish that task.

11. I hope that Obama watches Rachel.. Infrastructure is soooo needed.
We need to compete in the 21st century. It may not be a bunch of desk jobs where people don't get dirty, but it is desperately needed.. and there is no reason it cannot be done in a green way. Just updating many of theses systems would save resources long run.

12. tax breaks aren't all bad
Why is this such an issue? During the campaign Obama promised that would cut taxes for the middle class to hear some people you'd think these were exactly like the Bush tax cuts. I think after the last 8 years some here are going to let go the notion that wanting to cut taxes makes you a trick down Reagan wanna be.

13. The point is that no economic policy crafted before September 2008 is worth much
Obama's campaign promises circa December 2007 or even August 2008 are irrelevant today.

New information changes things... or it should.

18. Obama promised tax cuts. Remember the tax cut calculator?
I'm sorry but Rachel went over the deep end this time. Sitting there on her ivory tower acting like a tax cut for any reason was the worst thing in the world. Hopefully Obama sticks to the part about RAISING taxes for people as wealthy as Rachel. How out of touch can she get?!

Tax cut. I hope they re-do the math and find more money for infrastructure projects. That goes a lot further than a $600 tax stimulus.

39. That's true and Obama is not giving a tax cut for the reasons Bush did
He's doing it solely to help people out--not as a stimulator although it might have somewhat of a stimulative effect. All the corporations got their f*cking bailouts, the American people deserve way more than $500 IMO (although that is not practical--it's always regular people who have to sacrifice, of course).

27. That Is My Question, Too
and while I'm sure it's been answered somewhere, I haven't seen the terms discussed here.

Obama's initial tax cut was for people making less than about 200k if I recall correctly. There have been claims bandied about here that Obama is going to cut or rescind taxes for corporations or upper-income taxpayers. Which one of these are we talking about here in using the TARP money, or is it none of the above?

29. Maddow seems clueless to me sometimes
She was completely wrong when she was saying McCain was going to win and that America wasn't ready for a black President.

I watched her whining that Obama was including some tax cuts and not spending all the cash on the infrastructure. Well, duh, Rachel! He has to do a few things at a time. Funding for infrastructure improvements will be through SEVERAL stimulus packages, as Obama has indicated already.

Maddow doesn't do her homework sometimes... and it's pretty annoying.

But can you really blame her for being pessimistic and making some mistakes. Who doesn't?

I often get bored with her program because I'm its too late at night for me and I've noticed that COUNTDOWN is usually more cutting edge. But I'm glad Rachel has her own show and I hope it has a long and happy life.

35. Depends on WHO those tax cuts are for. If they are for low-to-middle income workers
Then they are appropriate. If they are for businesses who have kept or keep jobs here, then they are appropriate.

Otherwise, I would have to wonder the same thing. And the answer there is likely compromise speaks louder than words.

36. The economic reason? Timing.
Say one wants to build a bridge. It may take a year or two to start pouring concrete. Only then do most of the workers find a benefit - a job.

Tax breaks put money in people's hands right away. The problem? We voted this government in and we did not put it in to give money to Republicans.

37. Depends on who gets the tax cuts
A combination of both tax cuts (ie money going to the people) and spending (spur jobs) is required
