Will Obama change Bush's media ban of photos of soldier's caskets returning to the Air Force bases?
. . . should he?

I never saw them as exploitive. They are always respectful, but jarring and disturbing, nonetheless, especially the much higher numbers of dead soldiers shipped home over the past eight years from Iraq and Afghanistan.

I would rescind the ban. Certainly Congress wouldn't have the temerity to impose one.

1. I had given that absolutely no thought, but now that you mention it,

it seems risky in a way. For years there were no casket sightings to disturb people's complacency. Obama gets into office, and suddenly there are all these horrible reminders of the war. On the one hand, it helps connect people with reality. On the other, it associates Obama's Presidency with the tragedy. Tricky. My assumption is that Obama would go for the openness.

5. I hope so. I know it pissed off Biden - Bush didn't want him to go to the Dover DE air force base
for funerals etc.

So I guess my answer is "Yes".

8. Good question. And also......
Will he attend the funerals? That will definitely attract negative coverage from the right wing media. That decision will be a double edged sword.

9. I think politicians are afraid that people will see the true toll of war
demand that killing for politics should stop. War is a money making opportunity for corporations. That is why corporations having the same rights as an individual should be ended now. :dem:

10. He SHOULD allow photos of soldiers' caskets. He should also attend their funerals.
That way, everyone SEES the reality of war. Bush hid it. Obama shouldn't.

13. Sneaking these heroes home from the wars without acknowledgement of their sacrifices
is horrendous. The ban should be lifted and let the news media report as they see fit. It's not exploitation to recognize our fallen military as they return home...it's an act of appreciation that honors those souls who went to fight when others did not. If these wars are important enough to die for, then those who died are important enough to recognize on their last journey. The ban was a shameful act of a shameless president. A more honorable man would never have permitted it, much less endorsed it. This nation will weep when it finally sees the scores of men and women bearing our flag draped over their coffins, as well it should.
