Senator Boxer on Obama, bipartisanship and the stimulus
A quote from Barbara Boxer in this Daily Kos diary

(T)he one thing Barack Obama wants more than to have bipartisanship -- and he wants it -- the one thing he wants more is to solve the problem. And at the end of the day, we're going to do it with the Republicans or without them. We must act; these are serious crisis times. ...

(T)he Republican Party is turning into the Dr. No party: No, no, no. And there's always a reason: First, it's family planning, then we won't do that, and it'll be some other little thing. ... So if the Republicans want to nitpick, God bless them, I love them, but, you know, we'll do it without them if we have to.

The obstructionist (Repubs) are not going to get their way.

but when I was changing channels I saw Boxer listed in the line up and decided to watch.

Wish it becomes a video because it was a keeper.

Senator Boxer was beyond great this morning and always.

2. Thats what I've been waiting for. Democrats in Congress need to start building the package
Obama gave an outline. Its up to them to allocate it.

Its Obama's job to at least act like he's involving Republicans and taking them seriously. He's doing that. Now the Democrats in Congress should add more to things like infrastructure if they want.

5. that's exactly my take on it also.
People will perceive Obama and the Dems. as bending over backwards to be "bipartisan" when they didn't have to.

The Rethugs can either take a few small compromises that are being offered to them, or vote against it, in which case, they are going to be perceived as the bad guys who stalled and dithered and tried to play politics in the face of a crisis.

Why allow the Repukes to bully you? It's not necessary because their goal is to make you fail! They don't care about this country or what's best for Americans.

Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 09:34 PM by ProSense
The media will continue spinning in favor of the Republicans, but that and Boehner's tears will get them nowhere.

Even Steny Hoyer is mouthing off to them.

Obama is in a great position. He's got math on his side: a nearly 60% majority in both Houses of Congress.

Obama Doesn't Defend House Dems
January 27, 2009 02:51 PM

Republicans complained loudly to President Obama during a closed-door meeting Tuesday that House Democrats had shut them out of the process of writing the stimulus bill, said Republican members in the meeting.

The room burst into applause at the mention of congressional Democrats' alleged lack of bipartisan outreach. Obama did not come to their defense - a silence that many took to mean he acknowledged that lack of comity.

"I think the House Democrats have failed at bipartisanship, and I think he acknowledged that by what he didn't say as opposed to what he did," said Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.).

"He didn't say anything, but we got the message," said Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.).

Obama debated House Republicans on differences in political philosophy for more than half an hour. If the purpose was to pick up votes for the House stimulus package in the short term, the visit to the Capitol was largely a failure, several Republicans said.

Obama did tell Republicans, said Bachus, that he would "consider more tax cuts," but defended the amount of cuts in the current bill. He also made the case for the heavy spending, using historical examples going back to the Great Depression to argue that government spending was necessary to turn the economy around.

"That's going to be a gulf," said Bachus of the divide over taxes and spending, "but it starts with communication and the visit today was a very big first step."

Indeed, both interlocutors are taking a longer view. Obama hopes to keep the GOP from outright revolt and House Republicans hope to make congressional Democrats appear partisan and out of step with a more conciliatory president.

9. it's always something with them
We should make a Republican doll to replace the Republican senators/reps with. When you push the belly button, the doll screams out one of the catch phrases:

"media elite!"
"Liberal media unlevel playing field!"
"babies! abortion!"
"gotcha media!"
"deregulation!"
"tax cuts for the rich!!!"

You never know which one the Puke Doll will say; that's the fun! And we could pay it a lot less than the current living Republicans.

he could be playing games with them just to appease them and then turn around and put it back in there anyway. And even if he doesn't, there's no need to be mad, it's not the end of family planning legislation, it WILL get done under Obama I believe.

32. I guess you can see it in a way that Pres. Obama is willing to concede some
if the repubs are willing to back the stimulus, but it doesn't appear as if they will, so why should he?

I think that goes for the tax cuts as well. The House Dems are against it, the obstructionist repubs demand it, but I'm sure the President heard their call to vote against H.R.-1 no matter what so if they vote that way today, that should be the litmus test and failing to keep their end of the bargain, the Dems can still add the provision back in, right?

At least he tried.

46. At the end of the day you're going to have to SOLVE problems, in spite of Republicans not WITH them
You're there to SOLVE problems. Remember that. You will be judged --and that right soon-- by whether you solved the problems, not whether you pleased Republicans.

Right now, and thanks to a long era of Repuke dominance, America has several can-destroy-your-whole-country sized problems. This is a national emergency a real one, not a fake one like the Bush Administration created. SOLVE the problems, Democrats.

You're there to SOLVE the problems, Democrats, not to play footsie with Republicans.

At the end of the day, the Republicans have NO interest in helping you and every interest in seeing you fail and in tricking you into collapse and failure.

You have no choice but to LEAD and go it alone. You will solve America's problems over the Repukes' dead bodies. If you fail to solve the problems, it will be YOUR dead bodies lining DC's streets, and the Repukes will take power back again. Don't expect this see saw game to continue indefinitely in a period of chaos and downfall. Usually the rightwing of a country does what their rhetoric always implies and takes power permanently and exclusively for itself.
