Biden apologizes to Roberts for oath of office joke

(CNN) — An aide to Vice President Joe Biden tells CNN he called Chief Justice John Roberts last week to apologize for a light-hearted remark he made over the flubbed Inauguration Day oath of office.

"My memory is not as good as Justice Roberts, Chief Justice Roberts," Biden said last Wednesday, as he asked for a copy of the oath he was using to swear in senior members of the White House staff.

Several staffers reacted to the comment with groans and laughter, though President Obama, standing next to Biden, did not crack a smile.

An aide to the vice president said Tuesday the two men spoke privately after that comment. “They spoke and had a good conversation,” said the aide, who declined to give further details.

1. Probably a good move.
Roberts felt bad enough about the flub to get dressed up as Chief Justice and come to the white house to do it again.

3. Yeah, I heard about it on MSNBC.
I personally didn't think he was out of line to say what he said since I found it funny and it was a good dig but the thing was it was not diplomatic and as politician in that respect he should know better. As such although I understand Biden's point, if he's working for and with Obama he needs to hold his tongue a bit.

7. In fifth grade, we put on a show for the school about the United States.
Singing songs like My Country Tis of Thee, 50 Nifty United States, etc.

Well they had some speaking roles and mine was the presidential oath of office. :D

25. Sometimes the simplest things are the most difficult.
Roberts should had had a copy of the oath for a reference.

Cut it out, Dems. This is ridiculous.

We won.

12. Perhaps voters voted for change for a few reasons.....
civility being one of them. Perhaps we don't need the new VP acting like the Old VP?

9. I'm sure Barack would have insisted on that anyway
and I wouldn't be surprised if he initiated it. I thought the jab was funny, but I'm not setting a new tone in Washington. He was visibly and decidedly not amused.

27. Agreed. Just for a minute, imagine Cheney apologizing for anything.
Okay, you can stop now. I wanted to limit it to a minute, because more than 60 seconds of imagining Cheney acknowledging regrettable behavior would probably make your head explode.
