Freeps: Obama wasting electricity, turns up WH thermostat
The local freeps are patting themselves on the back this morning, as they have found a glittering example of why Obama should not be President. It seems Obama has turned up the thermostat at the White House, a clear signal that he is both an elitist and aristocrat. They proudly cite the following Huffington Post article:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/29/obama-cranks-up-white-hou_n_162127.html

Obama Cranks Up White House Thermostat: "You Could Grow Orchids In There"

Now, can you think of a way I can argue against this severe breach of American Energy policy, this impeachable offense we call "energy waste"?

1. How are they saving energy to offset the usage by the President?
I think ONE MAN is entitled to turn up the heat in his office if he is cold.

5. They certainly have
Exact quote from the space between the freep's ears:

1. Already cocktail parties at the White House.
Hors d'œuvres -- chicken curry, wagyu steak -- will be served in addition to drinks.
So here we are in a deep recession and the elite are wining and dining, expensively

2. Obama Cranks Up White House Thermostat: "You Could Grow Orchids In There"
During the campaign Obamasays we can no longer have our thermostats at 72 degrees.

13. They are hypocrites.
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 01:03 PM by liberalmuse
Bush pretty much looted the public treasury and spent trillions on war and they whine about a couple of cocktails and the fact that President Obama likes the oval office warm. They're a bunch of fools who's only purpose, it seems, is to serve as objects of derision and contempt for anyone who has a functioning brain.

23. Not to mention
The cocktail party they're referring to was bipartisan, attended by both Democratic and Republican senators.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/01/drinks-are-on-t.html

I forgot to ask the mental midgets if the Republicans boycotted the food and drink offering based on their princples of frugal consumption.

Yesterday it was bashing him over an innocuous jibe over DC snow days and now this?

8. That was my first thought upon reading it, actually. "Man, that's kinda wasteful."
I mean, it's no big deal, and the President is entitled to turn the thermostat up a few degrees, but if it were up to me I guess I'd prefer the thing be set to 65 instead of 85 or whatever.

It seems unlikely, given the remarks he made yesterday about Chicago kids going outside for recess in sub-freezing weather.

In other words, I don't exactly believe this without more proof.

They tried to make fun of him for it, citing this article:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/01/28/2009-01-28_hey_bam_thats_not_the_door.html

But from the picture in the article, it looks like he's walking by the window on the way to the door. And bonus, from the same link look at the idiotic picture of dumya trying to open a locked door. I mean, if you have to compare...there really is no comparison :)

14. Let him turn up the heat if he's cold.
Here's why:

A few weeks ago, our boiler broke. We were without heat for three days. I was very cold ... and that's all I could think about. No matter what I was doing, I was distracted by the fact that I was cold and it made me cranky.

I don't want our President to be distracted and cranky.

If the Freepers don't like it, tell them they can thank their "godly" Ronald Reagan for removing the solar panels from the WH.

16. The man is very slender, and with such low body fat he must be very sensitive
to cold. I know a few years ago when I managed to lose 15-20 lb and was slender again I got REALLY cold anytime it was less than 68.

If he put on some weight and had a higher body fat they would bitch about him eating too much and risking cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The RW is ALWAYS gonna find something to bitch about EVERY DAY as long as he is president. Ignore them.

33. When I was skinny, I was no less sensitive to cold than I am now.
148 lbs? 180 lbs? Eh. Didn't matter.

There, my useless anecdote cancels out your useless anecdote.

But that doesn't mean I'm never cold. When I'm cold, I put on a sweater instead of cranking up the heat. That way I'm not cranky, I save a bit of money, and I don't waste energy.

For all we know, the Bushinistas turned all the thermostats down to 40 or something. He has kids living in that house, I'd turn it up too.

If he likes the warmer temperature, they will save a bundle come summer and the AC is running 24/7.

39. Well, you can grow orchids at 70 degrees...
http://www.beautifulorchids.com/orchids/orchid_care_tips/temperature/temperature.html

THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE

To produce beautiful, long-lasting blooms, orchids must produce energy in the form of carbohydrates during the day when the temperature is high and store that energy at night when the temperature drops. This temperature fluctuation is necessary for orchids to bloom. Without a day-night fluctuation of 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit, the plants will grow plenty of healthy foliage but may stubbornly refuse to flower. A night temperature of 60-62 degrees F is ideal for optimum growth, but temperatures as low as 55 degrees F will not harm your plant. Daytime temperatures should range between 70 and 80 degrees F.

So what's the big deal?

41. As someone who suffers perpetually in the Winter...
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 06:19 PM by InvisibleTouch
...I know all too well that being cold makes you unwilling and even unable to do much of anything. Every small step is that much more of an effort. So by all means, President Obama should adjust the temperature to his preference. Given as much crap as he has to be dealing with now, the very least he should be is comfortable!

On edit: And btw, "just put on a sweater" doesn't necessarily work if you have a low metabolism and aren't generating much internal heat. I wear layers and layers and layers in Winter, and it doesn't make a damn bit of difference.
