Is Robert Gibbs the WORST press secretary EVER?
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 03:02 PM by alwysdrunk
If not who was ever worse? I can't BELIEVE I'm missing fucking Ari Fliesher at this point. Him and McClellan might have been lying bastards but at least they were watchable!

How the hell did this guy get this job? I personally know 10 people who could do a better job that Robert Gibbs.

Finally, an Obama cabinet pick that I strongly disagree with. Am I in the poutrage club now?

And his voice is weak as hell. He's fucking corny with all the baseball stuff. And he looks like he's intimidated by the reporters?

78. That's performance art.
It has nothing to do with the strength of what he says or the content of his responses. Just because you don't like the look on his face doesn't mean he has no fortitude.

89. I was a little harsh about him yesterday
However, I realise everyone has their own speaking style and mannerisms. As long as he gets the point across, this is what matters. Perhaps a little more direct eye contact with the camera would help though. Otherwise, he's doing okay.

29. Because he smacked down Hannity...
after one of the debates. Hannity was playing guilt by association against Obama, and Gibbs busted out with anti-Semitic quotes from a guy who had appeared on Hannity's show to spout BS about Obama's alleged guilt by association with terrorists. Gibbs is one of the few people who has managed to lay the smack down on Hannity, who typically bullies the living fuck out of people on his show.

43. I like that he's not a slick parody of a spokesman.
I like that he's smarter than anyone else in the room.

I like his sense of humor which he uses on himself as often as on anyone else.

I like the way he's in control of what comes out of his mouth.

I like that in a laid back way, he gets his zingers in and people in the room laugh with him.

He will make mistakes. When you talk for a living, that just comes with the territory. But, I like the whole package and he reflects Obama's steady style very well, imo.

65. now that you mention it..... true, another unconcious adoption of a cliche.
Obams says it in a just a little different tone of voice, however. His tone indicates he is trying to engage in a dialogue, not indicate "the way it is way." Perhaps The Commander in Chief needs to talk to his charge.

...he's answering questions.

He's not the story. His boss is the story. If it makes him sound like he's lying, then it's a problem, but only then.

Complaining about a press secretary's forensic skills is like complaining about the color of the seats in a theater. They may be ugly -- they may be plaid or paisley -- but you're there to see the play.

If you need a daily does of gotcha, find someone who TIVO'd Crossfire.

68. After he has been there for awhile, he'll just say "Let me think on that for awhile,
and I'll get back to you."

Or the ever popular "I don't know, I'm not sure, let me check on that."

You can shut people up and put them off for a bit by just saying "I dunno, but I'll find out."

He'll get the spirit after he settles in, and find an effective style.

97. He gave a complete answer. You claimed he avoided answering it. He said more than
what you're now saying he said, too.

70. That's my point, he's way too defensive
The mandate applies to him too. He needs to start acting like it and get some confidence up there.

91. WAY too defensive. He shouldn't be arrogant, but he should be confident.
He needs to come off the adrenaline high, real quick, already, immediately.

51. NO. i think he is doing a good job. What I DO WANT TO STOP
IS BEING NICE WIHT THE PRESS. He should be just like rethugs press secretaries before him were.. ...not answering any questions.. - give the pressers pretty much the same treatment... so they can learn a lesson.

55. I like him and the press knows he is tight with the boss so he isn't like some clueless press
secretaries who don't know what is really going on in the White House. He isn't always so affable - "an affable Alabaman with pit-bullish tendencies behind the scenes in defense of his boss."

Here is a profile of him:

58. Right. What is it with Democrats lacking the Power of their Conviction?
What is it with Democrats feeling the need to apologize for... being?

Why is it that Republicans support their President and vote in lock step while Democrats have to show that... whatever?

69. Normal people don't watch the White House press briefings on television
So while us political junkies would love to see Allison Janney up there entertaining us, style doesn't really matter at the end of the day to normal people. What matters is what information reporters get from the briefings because that determines how they write their stories. Those stories are read/watched by ordinary people. As long as Gibbs conveys the message to the press then he's doing a good job. Conveying it with style would be a nice bonus but it is not a necessity.

And I'm not saying I'm smarter or more clever than he is, I think I would give a better conference with better sound bite. I also think almost everyone personally knows someone who would be better.

93. It's not about the soundbyte. He is not President.
It's about being straight forward and telling the truth. You are used to the hoodwinkers and are elevating them above the earnest fact tellers. If you haven't heard, there is change in Washington, and you are going to have to adjust your expectations from slick sales people to the People's President Communications Director.

94. He was a smarmy, lying shitstick, no argument there
But the man could drop a soundbite. When Bush was lying us into war with Iraq, Ari's soundbites played very well at the end of the story. That was very valuable to Bush and greatly helped his presidency during that time. There may be a time when Obama could use a soundbite or two and that's what I'm thinking about.

Bush needed other people to speak for him.

who actually answers questions truthfully. Yes, he Umms a good deal, but he answers the questions, and is actually schooling these reporters. They have not been able to ask real questions for 8 years.

Puts an unassuming face on the presidency and gives it a folksy voice. Is fuck-up-free with the press. Meantime, we've got all the style and all the rhetoric we need in the oval office. What's not to love?
