Obama staples GOP congressmen to Limbaugh's fat butt

Are you with Obama or Rush?
By JONATHAN MARTIN | 1/29/09 8:00 PM EST Updated: 1/29/09 9:58 PM EST Text Size:

Americans United for Change, a liberal group, will begin airing radio ads in three states Obama won, with a tough question aimed at the GOP senators there: Will you side with Obama or Rush Limbaugh?

While the president and his top aides are using all the trappings of the office, courting members through phone calls, cocktail parties, West Wing sit-downs and even a politically mixed Super Bowl party, liberal groups are dispensing with the niceties and seeking to drive a wedge between Republicans and one of the right’s most influential leaders.

Politico has learned that tomorrow Americans United for Change, a liberal group, will begin airing radio ads in three states Obama won — Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada — with a tough question aimed at the GOP senators there: Will you side with Obama or Rush Limbaugh?

“Every Republican member of the House chose to take Rush Limbaugh’s advice,” says the narrator after playing the conservative talk radio giant’s declaration that he hopes Obama “fails.”

“Every Republican voted with Limbaugh — and against creating 4 million new American jobs. We can understand why a extreme partisan like Rush Limbaugh wants President Obama’s Jobs program to fail — but the members of Congress elected to represent the citizens in their districts? That’s another matter. Now the Obama plan goes to the Senate, and the question is: Will our Senator"—here the ad is tailored by state to name George Voinovich in Ohio, Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania, and John Ensign in Nevada—"side with Rush Limbaugh too?”

3. I look forward to seeing that.
And perhaps I will call Specter's office and pose that question to him as well. Except I will ask him "are you with the working men and women of PA or are you with Rush?"

4. The more we link the GOP to Rush the better for us
There's hardly a more radical republican, in terms of the stuff they say in public, then Rush, and hardly a worse person to be the face of the GOP to average Americans.

The only thing I worry about is that the commercials might backfire in terms of pressuring congressmen into voting for bills, similar to how such threats from the GOP backfired when they waved the 'Americans will die if you oppose this legislation' flag and some democrats decided "screw this, if I'm going to be attacked as weak on defense no matter how I vote then I'm voting with my party".

9. I was thinking Maine would be the best target
Fewer voters to reach, and two Republican Senators to win over.

I agree with you, though, that Burr, who's up for re-election in 2010, might be more vulnerable to pressure than Ensign, who isn't. Perhaps the reasoning is that Limbaugh is more popular in North Carolina than in Nevada, so the ad would be less effective.

10. You're probably right. Obama didn't win by a landslide here, but he
won, and we got rid of Liddy Dole, so I just thought we should start now to go after Burr. Hoping we have a really good candidate waiting in the wings.

14. Going after Burr
What do you see as Burr's main vulnerabilities? His notes his support of a pro-industry bill to limit labeling on food and drugs. If there are other things that should be included, PM me with the information and I'll add them to the bio.

16. Obama hasn't done anything to tie Limbaugh to the GOP other than his initial comment.

I wish he did. Outside groups are doing his dirty work.

19. What do you want him to do, talk about Rush every day?
His initial comment was politically brilliant and it showed the way. The Republicans are filling in the blanks with their own behavior, opening the door to campaigns like this, which is what they used to do to us all the time.

20. I even heard Carville (ick) on CNN today saying congratulations
to rush for being the leader of the GOP. That ignorant tart tara was getting all pissed off about it. She's another one I don't understand. She's talking about her good friend Steele etc. I don't understand my people that say they are republicans. Horrible.
