Franco Harris may take a run at Arlen Specter
Lancaster (PA) New Era
Published: Feb 06, 2009

By Tom Murse, Staff Writer

Now that MSNBC yakker Chris Matthews has decided against taking on U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in 2010, what big-name Democrat will step into the ring against the tough-as-nails Republican?
Franco Harris.
Yes, that Franco Harris -- the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back.
Maybe.
The chairman of Pennsylvania's Democratic Party, T.J. Rooney, told Politico.com recently he's been hearing a lot of buzz about activists trying to recruit Harris.
Politico.com made note of Harris' work in campaigning for lots of leading Democrats in Pennsylvania, including traveling across the state for Barack Obama during his campaign.
Other Democrats said to be weighing a run against Snarlin' Arlen are Rep. Allyson Schwartz, state Rep. Josh Shapiro and National Constitution Center CEO Joseph Torsella.

3. Well, I believe Franco is a guy with a lot of integrity ... and he has the name recognition.
I know he's done a lot of campaigning for Democrats... not sure about his political savvy, but I'm open to being persuaded. But, there are other people on the "possibles" list who are interesting, too ... like Josh Shapiro, who I think is a very inspiring speaker.

10. I need to do some research, I see. And if I like what I learn, I will definitely
be on board with a donation or two no matter who ends up running. Thanks for the info. :hi:

4. That's kind of hard to call
I wonder what chance he'd have against Specter. Her sure has name recognition. :) It'd be pretty exciting. I hope he does it.

6. I'm interesed in hearing more details.
I don't know where Franco stands on the pertinent issues but he did a lot of campaigning for President Obama.

7. He's a businessman ... so he knows something about economics...
From bios online:

" ... Harris is now the owner of Super Bakery, Inc., and recently purchased the failing Parks Sausage Company, the first publicly held black-owned business in the United States."

But uh-oh ... do I smell lobbyist?

"... Harris is also a paid representative for the Harrah’s/Forrest City Enterprises casino plan for downtown Pittsburgh. ..."

"Franco Harris has not only given Pittsburgh fans numerous memories from the football field; he has also given back and improved the Pittsburgh community through his business and generous contributions."

12. So, you're an athletic supporter (hahahaha!)
I saw Franco play at PSU, too, a couple of times (I was in junior high, sitting in those old metal stands in the south endzone.)

Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) (L) waves to supporters as former Pittsburgh Steelers running backs Jerome Bettis (2nd-L) and Franco Harris (R), and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) (3rd-L) look on after an endorsement event at the Soldiers and Sailors Military Museum and Memorial March 28, 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

17. Bettis was a Dem this time around?
He was a die-hard Bushite.

Welcome, Jerome, but the next Dem candidate will probably be white. Are you OK with that?

26. I may switch over to Republican to vote against Specter in the primary.
If we can knock him off in the primary with some psycho wingnut like Pat Toomey it will make the general much easier. I don't think any Democrat can beat Specter in the general.
