...anyone remember the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings?

Remember when Whitey Whitebread Senator from Whiteyville--ok, sorry, Orin Hatch--was hearing Judge Thomas' testimony about hurtful racial stereotypes?

Remember how Orin claimed complete ignorance of the racist idea that black men were all well-endowed?

That he was shocked, shocked, to hear such a thing?

It was one of those "stupid, or lying?" moments. I actually felt kind of embarrassed to be watching.

I mean, what Thomas was talking about WAS genuinely outrageous, and I gave Thomas the benefit of the doubt when he expressed disgust over such stereotypical depictions of black men.

But it was Orin's gape-mouthed "heavens to Betsy!" reactions that got to me. The idea that he'd somehow got to his age, and NEVER once heard that black men are said to be well-endowed?

Never?

I mean, maybe it really is so incredibly scrubbed and hygienically free from anything non-white in his world, that such topics never even came up.
